Chung Yoo-Ra will be detained until February 22, according to the court's decision. Chung Yoo-Ra was arrested nearly a month ago for overstaying her visa in Denmark, at the same time that South Korean authorities issued an arrest warrant for her in South Korea.
South Korea later asked Denmark to extradite Chung Yoo-Ra to investigate the scandal.
The Danish Public Prosecutor's Office said it had asked the South Korean authorities to answer a number of questions and was awaiting answers before making a final decision on the extradition. It said it would take several weeks to make a decision after receiving information from the South Korean authorities.
Chung Yoo-Ra, 20, is an avid equestrian. She is believed to have bought and trained horses in Denmark in the past. When questioned by Danish police, Chung Yoo-Ra said that her stay in Denmark was related to the sport, while denying any involvement in the domestic scandal.
Chung Yoo-Ra's mother, Choi Soon-sil, is a close friend of impeached President Park Geun-hye. In the case involving her daughter, Choi is accused of using her influence to get Chung Yoo-Ra admitted to Ewha Womans University, a prestigious university in Seoul.
Investigations revealed that the school admitted Chung Yoo-Ra while rejecting other candidates with better academic performance. Several school lecturers, including the former principal of the school, were investigated for allegedly favoring Chung Yoo-Ra./.
