As the world’s largest social media platform, Facebook is revealing more and more about us. The University of Melbourne (Australia) has just conducted a new study on the difference in word usage between the two genders on Facebook, titled “Women are warmer but no less assertive than men”. Accordingly, women use the word “husband” more often while men rarely use the word “wife”. This may be because men prefer to refer to their wives by name, or want to do something more practical than mentioning their wives’ names online.
The study concluded: Female users’ language is warmer, friendlier, and more person-focused, while male users’ is more aloof, distant, and goal-focused. Men swear a lot on Facebook. In addition to swearing, words like “fight,” “sport,” “bet,” “win,” and “government” are also used frequently. What’s more surprising, according to the researchers, is that women are just as assertive as men.
The study looked at the behavior of 68,228 Facebook users. They deployed language analysis tools to see what was being said. It seems that how we think reflects how we express ourselves on social media. However, it is important to remember that Facebook is just an open forum, many people tend to act how they want to be seen by their friends, not how they themselves are./.
