Vietnam's population in 2018 increased by one million people compared to 2017, at 94.67 million people.

Vietnam is ranked 14th among the most populous countries in the world, said Mr. Nguyen Doan Tu, Director General of the General Department of Population and Family Planning at the Conference on population work implementation in 2019, on January 18.

According to Mr. Tu, the total birth rate in 2018 nationwide was 2.05 children per woman of childbearing age. 24 out of 63 provinces and cities had a high birth rate of over 2.3 children, some places had 2.5 children. Meanwhile, 16 provinces and cities had a low birth rate of under 1.8 children, some places had under 1.6 children.

The gender imbalance at birth, with more boys than girls, continues to increase rapidly and is at an all-time high. The sex ratio at birth is 115.1 boys/100 girls, up 3% compared to 2017, failing to meet the target (the target was 112.8 boys/100 girls).

Mr. Tu said that 2019 is the first year that the Ministry of Health has implemented a resolution on population work in the new situation. The goal is to focus on maintaining the replacement fertility rate, limiting the growth rate of the sex ratio at birth, improving population quality and providing health care for the elderly.

"The basic targets to be achieved are a reduction in the average birth rate, an increase in average life expectancy to 73.6 years old and a sex ratio at birth of 114 boys/100 girls," said Mr. Tu.

The General Department of Population and the NGO Marie Stopes Vietnam also summarized the project "Enhancing sustainable access to quality family planning and reproductive health care services in Vietnam for the period 2015-2020".

To date, the project has trained more than 3,000 staff in the field of family planning. The project has provided long-term contraceptive services to 336,000 women, preventing 650,000 unwanted pregnancies.
