Conservative Party fails to win majority, British Prime Minister called to resign

June 9, 2017 15:22

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party has certainly lost its majority in the June 8 election and cannot form a government on its own, leaving Britain in a situation of a hung parliament.

According to Reuters, out of 643/650 announced parliamentary seats, the Conservative Party won only 313 seats, although it was the party with the most seats but certainly not enough to form a government on its own. The Labour Party, the Conservative Party's biggest rival, won 260 seats. The situation where no party has enough seats to form a government on its own is called a hung parliament.

With just 10 days left until Britain begins negotiations to leave the European Union (EU), it remains unclear which parties will form a coalition to form a government and guide the process of leaving the EU.

Prime Minister Theresa May is facing pressure from many sides to resign, but she has shown no intention of doing so.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called on May to resign after she had "lost votes, lost support and lost confidence".

Anna Soubry, a Conservative MP, said the British prime minister was in a "difficult position" after a "terrible election campaign".

Mrs. May was the one who called the election three years early. Now, with the Conservative Party unable to win a majority in the House of Commons, Mrs. May's decision is being criticized for destroying the Conservative Party's fragile majority in the House of Commons.

"This is completely opposite to May's purpose when she held an early election. Now she has to start the Brexit negotiation process from a weaker position," AFP quoted Professor Tony Travers at the London School of Economics (UK) as saying.

According to the BBC, Prime Minister May has called an early election to consolidate support in Parliament before starting Brexit negotiations. Mrs May said that without an early election, Labour, Scottish National Party and Liberal Democrat MPs in Parliament could make the negotiations difficult.

A BBC political editor said May had no intention of resigning today, but the editor was not sure whether the prime minister had made a final decision.

46 million voters in 650 constituencies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will vote to choose their representatives in the UK parliament.

According to CNN, in the British political system, the prime minister is the leader of the party with enough seats in the House of Commons to form a government. They will need to achieve a majority of seats in the House of Commons, which is 326 seats.

The UK parliamentary election has been set ahead of schedule for June 8 instead of waiting until 2020. The election takes place after a year that can be considered the most "dramatic" in British history.

Nearly a year ago, British voters voted to leave the European Union (EU), also known as Brexit. This country has also suffered a series of terrorist attacks in recent times, the most recent being the car crash and slashing on a bridge in London on June 3.
