"I am very pleased with the election results. We won 83 seats," Channel News Asia quoted Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as saying at a press conference early this morning after the vote count was announced. "It's a good result for the People's Action Party (PAP) and a great result for Singapore."

69.86% of the vote went to the PAP, nearly 10% higher than in the 2011 election. The opposition Workers' Party (WP) won 6 out of 89 parliamentary seats.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, the PAP's secretary-general, said he called for elections because Singapore is at a "turning point" and he needs "a new, clear mandate" to move the country forward.

The election is taking place against a backdrop of Singapore focusing on economic risks stemming from China's slowdown and volatile markets. DBS Bank lowered its forecast for Singapore's economic growth this year to 1.8%, 0.6 percentage points lower than its July forecast.
