Organ donation registration increased 16 times after Hai An's death
After the touching organ donation story of 7-year-old girl Hai An, in the past 10 days, nearly 1,000 people have registered to donate organs.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Phuc, Deputy Director of the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation, said that this is a record number. The highest number of people registered to donate on a given day was nearly 100, while before that, there were only 4-5 people per day. The center's hotline is constantly on call day and night to guide the procedure.
Since Hai An passed away, a total of nearly 1,000 people have registered to donate organs (out of a total of 1,200 people who have donated since the beginning of the year) through two channels: directly coming to the center or registering online.
VTV's MC Hong Nhung and Mai Trang come to register for organ donation. |
Thus, in the past 5 years, the number of people registering to donate organs nationwide has exceeded 13,000, of which 85 cases registered while alive, 213 people registered to donate their bodies, and the rest donated organs after brain death.
Among those who recently registered were a monk from Thailand and a nun from Quang Tri, along with many actors and MCs of VTV such as Hong Nhung, Mai Trang, Hanh Phuc, Minh Ha...
Especially on March 8, many women choose this special day to go to the center to register for organ donation.
Most people shared that they had researched and intended to do so, but for many reasons they did not have the courage. The touching story of 7-year-old Hai An motivated everyone to write an application.
Ms. Tran Thi Thu Hien (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi) said that thanks to Hai An's story, she and her husband had more motivation to register to donate organs.
“When my children heard about her story, they asked me if I could do the same thing as her if I died. Hai An's story has created a huge impact,” Hien shared.
According to Mr. Phuc, Vietnam currently has over 16,000 people with heart, liver, kidney, lung failure... waiting for organ transplants and about 6,000 people waiting for corneal transplants. However, the source of organs is very scarce, in the past 5 years, there have been only 25 cases agreeing to donate organs.
