After 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of extra time without a goal, the two teams had to decide the winner on penalties and two missed shots by Oscar Cardozo and Rodrigo continued to make Benfica suffer defeat for the second time in a row.
This is the third time in the past eight years that Sevilla has won the tournament, the predecessor of the UEFA Cup, after 2006 and 2007. In the penalty shootout, all four of their players successfully executed the penalty.
Meanwhile, Benfica have lost seven European Cup finals since winning back-to-back European Cups in 1961 and 1962, continuing a 52-year streak. Last year, they also lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the final in Amsterdam.
