Nadal defeats Federer to reach the Australian Open final.
Rafael Nadal advanced to the final of the 2014 Australian Open after defeating Roger Federer 3-0 (7-6 (7/4), 6-3, 6-3) in the semi-final match on the afternoon of January 24th.
The semi-final match between Nadal and Federer lasted 2 hours and 24 minutes. After a closely contested first set, and only managing to defeat Federer in a tie-break, the Spaniard proved too strong for his opponent, the 17-time Grand Slam champion, in the following two sets.
Even more noteworthy is that in the second set, Nadal suffered a hand injury, with blood oozing out. Just when everyone thought Nadal would struggle with this injury, he played explosively. Accurate shots and abundant stamina helped Nadal win the two sets quite easily, 6-3, 6-3.
It must also be said that Federer made far too many errors. According to the organizers' statistics, Federer made 50 unforced errors, double that of Nadal. In total, Federer only won 86 points compared to Nadal's 105. However, Federer had 34 winners compared to Nadal's 28.
