The bombing occurred at a fruit and vegetable market at 8 p.m. local time. "Around my shop, the bodies of the victims of the bombing were lying on the ground. I helped rescue workers put the bodies into five vehicles," said Alhaji Ahmed, a witness at the scene.

Reuters news agency also quoted another witness saying that eight ambulances were mobilized to rescue the victims.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the area has been the scene of attacks by Boko Haram militants, who have killed thousands of people in northern Nigeria in an effort to establish a Sharia-based state.

Since the beginning of this year, when the Nigerian army retook control of Boko Haram, the group has focused its attacks on markets, bus stations and places of worship.
