Beating neighbor to death, sentenced to 13 years in prison

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of July 10, Nghe An Provincial People's Court brought the case of Dang Thanh Binh (born in 1973, residing in Nghia An commune, Nghia Dan district) for murder to public trial.

Through questioning in court, Binh's criminal behavior was clarified: at around 9:00 p.m. on March 6, 2014, after being drunk, Binh called Bui Van Phuong (born in 1970), who lived in the same neighborhood, to invite him to play billiards - Phuong agreed. After Binh arrived at the shop, he saw Phuong and Truong Van Hien, both from Nghia An commune, playing, Binh immediately asked about the rules and how to play and then joined in.

After a few games, Hien lost first so he went to the table to drink water. Binh and Phuong were playing when they got into an argument. Phuong said, "You only lost a few coins, why are you arguing?" At the same time, Hien took money from his pocket and threw it on the pool table, calling Binh a "dirty toy". Feeling insulted, Binh punched Hien in the mouth and ran to the chair where Phuong was sitting, punching and kicking Phuong, causing Phuong to fall to the ground.

After standing up, Mr. Phuong said to Binh, "If you want to punch me, then punch me." After hearing the challenge, Binh immediately ran over and used his hands and feet to punch and kick Mr. Phuong, causing him to faint and die on the way to the emergency room. After committing the crime, Binh went to Nghia Dan District Police to confess his crime.

At court, Binh confessed honestly, repented of his crimes, and the victim's family filed a petition for a lighter sentence for the defendant. Since the incident, Binh's family has compensated the victim nearly 96 million VND. Realizing that Binh's criminal behavior was hooliganism, it was necessary to isolate the defendant from social life for a long time so that Binh could reform and realize his mistakes. After consideration, the panel sentenced Binh to 13 years in prison for murder.
