Daniel Craig surprises with his comedic criminal role
Actor 007 is the highlight in "Logan Lucky" - a dramatic and humorous work by director Steven Soderbergh.
The film's protagonist is Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum), a former high school basketball star who suffered a leg injury that left him disabled. His dream of playing professionally shattered, Jimmy makes a precarious living as a manual laborer. He is fired from his job at the Charlotte Motor Speedway racing complex, and learns that he may lose visitation rights to his daughter (Farrah Mackenzie).
Faced with a crisis, Jimmy enlists his younger brother Clyde (Adam Driver) to rob money from the very place where he was fired. To make the plan work, the Logan brothers convince Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) - a bank robber who uses explosives and is still serving a sentence in prison. With the help of Logan's younger sister Mellie (Riley Keough) and Joe Bang's two brothers, Jimmy's plan is carried out with many unexpected situations.

Daniel Craig (right) sometimes overshadows the two male leads of the film in comedy scenes. |
The brightest spot in acting came from actor 007 Daniel Craig when he abandoned his elegant spy image. The role demonstrates the versatile role-playing ability of a world-class actor.Transforming from appearance to personality, transforming into a tattooed criminal with a sense of silliness in the way he talks and commits crimes. In many scenes, Daniel Craig sometimes overshadows both male leads. The scene where Joe Bang enthusiastically writes out chemical equations to explain to the Logan brothers how to make explosives is one of the funniest scenes in the film.
The film marks the fourth time Channing Tatum has collaborated with director Soderbergh. The 37-year-old actor does a good job portraying the inner self of a character who is always haunted by bad luck. Jimmy is portrayed as a very intelligent person hiding behind a silly face. In the scene where the character listens to his daughter sing, the actor does a good job of expressing his choked emotions.
Adam Driver continues to show his charm thanks to his almost emotionless facial expression, suitable for the "dumb face" comedy style. Riley Keough, despite having little screen time, still leaves an impression. The character of the actress born in 1989, dresses provocatively, has a sharp personality, and easily turns promiscuous players into jokes.

The Logan brothers have many funny scenes with their stiff faces. |
Director Steven Soderbergh builds the new film into a series of dramatic and funny episodes, similar to his famous Ocean's Eleven trilogy. The main humorous atmosphere combines different styles of humor: slapstick (creating laughter through physical gestures), deadpan (creating laughter with "stiff" expressions) and creating laughter through illogical situations.
The slapstick color mainly comes from the juggling of Joe Bang's two younger brothers, most notably the scene of making explosives and running for their lives when they are about to explode. Meanwhile, the "frozen" style seems to be reserved for the faces of the two actors Adam Driver and Channing Tatum. Their bewildered expressions in the series of bar brawls or the convincing of Joe Bang create a lot of laughter.
The illogical setting also brings laughter. When Joe Bang asks his two younger brothers to go into the forest to meet a “bear” to get some goods, viewers easily associate it with the nickname of a big shot. However, the delivery man is a guy in a bear suit, completely contrasting with the seriousness of the situation or the forest setting. In the middle of the film, the screenwriter suddenly inserted a debate that lasted more than three minutes aboutGame of Thrones, turning the tension in the situation into a joke.
The satirical element inLogan Luckyis effectively exploited by the construction of odd characters. A brand ambassador, dressed as a racer, appears to be fierce but speaks nonsense about the racing format he sponsors. Another character is a rich playboy, always showing off his knowledge and liking to buy models that are not yet widely available, but are actually a fleet of automatic cars that are despised by car enthusiasts. This line of rich but ridiculous people creates a contrast with the working-class characters like the Logan brothers.
* Humorous atmosphere in the work
As a heist film, the plot is convincing thanks to its well-connected characters and connections. Although the execution of the plan is somewhat simpler than the heists in the trilogy,Ocean's Eleven, the story still makes the audience concentrate to grasp. Like previous works, Soderbergh continues to distract the audience about the outcome of the robbery by pushing the audience into the emotional moments of Jimmy and his daughter, as well as his rule of "knowing when to stop", then opening up the unexpected ending.
Visually, director Soderbergh - who used to be a cinematographer - exploits good angles through editing and focusing.Logan LuckyShowcasing close-ups of the main characters' expressions, as well as doing a good job of transitioning situations with just one focus.
The film's music includes two powerful songs. Immortal songsTake Me Home, Country Roadsconveys the beauty of Southern American culture, as well as creating an emotional segment about father-son love. Meanwhile, the songAmerica The BeautifulThe solemn imagery of the parade brings unexpected moments of calm to an otherwise satirical comedy.
The weak point of the work is that some characters are redundant and unnecessary. For Vietnamese audiences who are not very knowledgeable about American culture, the emotions can be interrupted every time the characters discuss this element in depth.
Steven Soderbergh was born in 1963, has successful works in many genres such as psychology (Sex, Lies, and Videotape), biography (Erin Brockovich), comedy (Magic Mike) or drama (Ocean's Eleven, Traffic - the work that helped him receive the Oscar "Best Director" in 2001). In 2013, the filmmaker shared his intention to take a long break, but suddenly returned with a highly rated work. Logan Lucky received 93% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 7.5.
