Learning to dig for sandworms is not simple. According to Mr. To Duy Da (village 4, Quang Minh commune), even a quick learner will need half a month. The sandworm nest is a small mound of sand the size of a fist, under that mound is a sand flower shaped like a dog's paw. The digger uses a shovel to skewer from that flower to the sand mound and then toss it up. |

The sandworm lies under a thick layer of sand and must be reached out to pull it up, or else it is thrown out on the beach. People who dig for worms must be patient and in good health. Ms. Nguyen Thi Gai (village 3, Quang Thinh commune) confided: “If you just dig for fun to improve your meals, it is not difficult, but if you decide to make a living by doing it, it is very hard. At night, when the water recedes, you have to work outside from 11 pm until morning. During the day, the sun and wind are very hot, sometimes there is only a place to work at 11-12 pm, when you come home in the evening, your hands and feet are exhausted, you don't want to eat anymore". |
