'Peach, Pho and Piano' to be shown on TV

This information was given by Director of the Department of Cinema Vi Kien Thanh at the regular press conference for the first quarter of 2024 held by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (VHTTDL) on the morning of April 11.

Mr. Vi Kien Thanh saidPeach, Pho and Pianowill be shown at the film week celebrating the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory at the end of April. On October 10, Vietnam Television will show this film to audiences nationwide.

From the phenomenonPeach, pho and piano,Talking about the direction of popularizing State films, Mr. Thanh affirmed that State films will not be made and then "stored away" but will be shown in many forms to serve the people. Mr. Thanh said that the State cannot use private films to show to serve political tasks, because it does not have money to buy copyrights.

"We are always asked by many parties, including the Ministry of Finance: "The films made by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism do not generate revenue, do not recover capital, are they stored in warehouses?". I affirm that State films are used to screen at film weeks and festivals at home and abroad, at cultural centers of provinces and cities, and are shown for free on television."Director of the Department of Cinema added.

Mentioning the success ofPeach, pho and piano,Director of the Department of Cinema explained 3 reasons:"First, the film was well-produced and had a cast that performed well. Second, the film received support from the media and online community even though no money was spent on promotion and distribution. Third, the film was released at a favorable time after the Tet holiday, when cinemas were saturated with films about other content such as family life and society. It is not easy for a State-ordered film to have all three of these factors.", Director Vi Kien Thanh analyzed.

Regarding the break-even revenue of Dao, Pho and Piano, the leader of the Cinema Department analyzed that the film was sold at half the normal ticket price. If the film was sold at the normal ticket price, under favorable release conditions, the film could have made a profit of 21 billion VND instead of breaking even.

"Regarding the recent release of the film "Peach, Pho and Piano", we had to discuss and negotiate with a number of units such as Cinestar, Beta, and the National Cinema Center. They contribute to cinema and do not benefit from it. We only signed contracts with units that accept 100% of the revenue to be paid to the state budget.", said the leader of the Department of Cinema.

Mr. Thanh said that for many years, the State has ordered investment in film production but has never had funds for film distribution and promotion. The Cinema Department does not have the function of distributing films but must have its own unit. Previously, the distribution was handled by Fafim Vietnam. However, this enterprise encountered many problems after equitization and is currently inactive.
