Toyota's view that "no matter how modern the equipment is, people are still the key factor" is reflected in the company's focus on training and developing human resources comprehensively throughout the system, from dealers to suppliers. In addition, valuing people is also reflected in developing excellent individuals and groups that can adhere to the company's philosophy, encouraging and inspiring employees to strive for perfection.

This is also principle number 10 of Toyota's 14 global operating principles. In Vietnam, Toyota attaches special importance to training and developing human resources comprehensively throughout the entire system from factories, to dealers, suppliers and society as the responsibility of a "big brother" in the automobile industry.

Internal human resource development

For internal training in production, Toyota Vietnam's Production Training Center, which meets regional and global standards, has been operating since 2008, making Toyota one of the leading automobile manufacturers with a professional and well-organized production training center in Vietnam.

All instructors are experts who have been trained, evaluated, tested rigorously and certified according to Toyota regional standards. At the same time, facilities and equipment must also undergo rigorous evaluation by the corporation before being put into operation to serve training activities.

Here, the center not only trains basic skills for workers before starting actual work, but also continuously trains to improve soft skills and the quality of workers' and managers' skills to keep up with the trend of technological development that is changing every day.

In recent years, especially in 2018, Toyota Vietnam has achieved excellent results in the Toyota Asia Pacific Skills Competition, ranking 4th out of 10 participating countries with 4 Gold awards, 4 Silver awards, and 1 Bronze award. This demonstrates Toyota Vietnam's efforts to develop human resources and improve production quality.

Regarding training and human resource development activities at dealerships, Toyota regularly implements training activities and programs for all frontline dealership staff and service technicians on knowledge and professional skills.

In addition, the famous Japanese hospitality spirit of Omotenashi is also trained, practiced and becomes the culture and style of each employee when serving customers at all Toyota dealers and branches nationwide.

Furthermore, Toyota always encourages employees of the Toyota Dealer system to improve their skills and professional knowledge to serve customers better. In particular, the Toyota Skills Competition is a typical example. Over the past 20 years, this competition has demonstrated Toyota's determination in human resource development and is the foundation for the company to build trust and gain smiles from customers.

The role of along-standing FDI enterprisesinautomotive industry

On the supplier side, Toyota initially improved the capacity of Vietnamese suppliers in 5S, safety, and quality management to help them supplement their experience and meet quality requirements to become global suppliers of spare parts. Toyota established a specialized functional department to train and develop human resources for suppliers, transfer 5S, Toyota's production know-how (TPS), and quality management (QCC). Through this activity, Toyota has contributed to training and improving the quality of human resources for Vietnamese suppliers, thereby helping them improve production quality, business efficiency, and competitiveness.

In particular, as an automobile manufacturer and a long-standing FDI enterprise in the industry, Toyota Vietnam has always been persistent in its efforts to contribute to human resource training and development activities for Vietnam since its inception. Automotive engineering students from universities and colleges nationwide are no longer unfamiliar with Toyota Technical Training Support Programs (T-TEP) or Monozukuri courses.

If T-TEP helps schools improve the quality of training students and skilled technicians, students have the opportunity to be recruited to work at Toyota Vietnam's dealer system, as well as contribute to the abundant human resources for the Vietnamese automobile industry, Monozukuri directly supports Vietnamese enterprises to improve labor productivity and production and business efficiency, as well as technical students have the opportunity to access and understand more deeply about the Production System (TPS) and the secrets of Toyota's success.

Through Toyota Vietnam's internal and external human resource training activities, it can be seen that for the economy to develop faster and become more competitive, the responsibility does not only belong to state management agencies or local authorities at all levels, but also depends on the internal strength of the enterprise itself. This is not a temporary activity but requires long-term investment and daily application. By making good use of lessons and experiences from Toyota Vietnam, Vietnamese enterprises are completely confident in improving their competitiveness in the region and internationally.
