(Baonghean.vn) – In the past, former center back Huy Hoang was considered one of the best defenders in Vietnamese football. As the assistant coach of SLNA, the former SLNA captain seems to be helping the Nghe An team significantly improve their defense.
During the “Golden Age”, defense was a big challenge for any team. That was the appearance of famous central defenders such as Van Luu, Quang Hai, Huu Thang, Sy Son...
Since 1998, when he was only 17 years old, Huy Hoang was promoted to the SLNA first team to compete with his seniors and after the 2001 championship, Huy Hoang won the title of Best Young Player of Vietnamese Football.
While still playing, Huy Hoang fought for many years in the national team, and then participated in the coaching staff supporting the head coach. However, it was not until the end of 2017 that he officially became the assistant coach of the Nghe An team, along with coaches Nguyen Duc Thang, Nguyen Van Thinh, and Pham Anh Tuan to steer the SLNA ship.
And in 2018, despite facing many difficulties, SLNA still ranked 4th overall. And one of Huy Hoang's tasks as SLNA's assistant coach is to pass on his playing experience to young players, helping them to maximize their abilities, especially the defenders.

In his new and old position, Coach Huy Hoang said: “In the past, when I was still playing, I used to support the coaching staff. However, when I returned to be the assistant coach of SLNA, I realized that I still had many shortcomings and had to learn many things. One of my tasks is to help the players limit mistakes in defense.”
It is true that in just 2 years, Huy Hoang has been a member of SLNA's coaching staff, SLNA's defense is gradually returning to its original brand. The clearest proof is that in V.League 2019, SLNA's defense only conceded 26 goals/26 matches, becoming the most solid defense in V.League.
Those are very impressive numbers because that achievement is equal to the achievement of SLNA's defense in 2014 when still led by coach Nguyen Huu Thang. And the number of 26 goals conceded is the best in the last 5 years.

Specifically, in the 2015 season, when coach Quang Truong led SLNA, the Nghe An team's defense conceded 33 goals, an average of 1.3 goals/match. In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, SLNA conceded a total of 36 goals, an average of 1.4 goals/match. This caused SLNA to not have a good ranking and to lose regrettably in many matches.
When Huy Hoang started joining SLNA's coaching staff in the 2018 season, despite the defense being constantly disrupted due to injuries, the Nghe An team reduced their conceded goals by 4 compared to the previous season. And in 2018 compared to 2019, the number of goals conceded decreased from 32 to 26. Not only that, SLNA also had 11 clean sheet matches.
That achievement of course has a great contribution from each element in SLNA's defense at V.League 2019 such as Nguyen Manh, Van Khanh, Damir Memovic, Dinh Dong and Dinh Hoang. However, the mark of assistant coach Nguyen Huy Hoang is relatively clear.
In each training session, Huy Hoang will be the one to adjust the defensive system for SLNA defenders in each movement. At the same time, SLNA defenders must know how to distribute their strength, making the most of the offside trap advantage. Thanks to that, the physical strength of SLNA defenders at the end of the match has also improved significantly.

Closing V.League 2019, SLNA's defense had major turmoil when Nguyen Manh left, goalkeeper Van Hoang was expected to replace him. Along with that, Dinh Hoang and Damir Memovic also left SLNA and left certain gaps. The problem for Coach Quang Truong as well as Coach Huy Hoang is to find a replacement and stabilize the defense system.
And in the 2020 season, SLNA still has Hoang Van Khanh - a player who is growing up every day and is trusted with the captain's armband, Dinh Dong, Xuan Manh and the appearance of center-back Gustavo Santos - a center-back who used to play for Viettel as well as Saigon. Not only that, SLNA also has another backup option for phase 2, Sergio Osagho, who is 1m95 tall.
Last year, Huy Hoang completed his A certificate – Asian Football Confederation. With this certificate, Huy Hoang has reached the same level as many other coaches in V.League.
