How important are seat belts in the back seat?
Many Vietnamese people currently have the mentality of wearing seatbelts to "deal" with Traffic Laws, even considering them "redundant". People sitting in the back seat of a car are "afraid" to do this because they are afraid of being bothered and think it is unnecessary, even though it can save lives in case of an accident.
There have been many accidents in Vietnam that have caused serious consequences to human life. The most common case is the driver is fine, but the person sitting in the back seat dies. The main reason is that the person sitting in the back seat is not wearing a seat belt, so when the car collides, it leads to being thrown out of the car, hitting the body, leading to death.

Are seat belts in the back seat redundant?
Many car users in Vietnam today hardly use the seat belt in the back seat. They only use this function when driving or sitting in the front seat, mainly to deal with Traffic Laws. Only a few people understand the importance of this safety function and proactively fasten the belt every time they put themselves in the car seat, even in the back seat.
For many people, wearing a seat belt is a redundant action, especially for those who have never driven a car and do not have this habit. They will feel uncomfortable and frustrated when the belt is tied around their body. If they cannot overcome the initial feeling, wearing a seat belt is the most uncomfortable action for these people.
Some people who wear seat belts when sitting in the back seat are even seen by others jokingly, because they think that this is an unnecessary and redundant action. This further creates a fear of using seat belts among car passengers.

People who do not wear seat belts when sitting in cars are often thrown out of the car in a collision. |
When sitting in the back seat without wearing a seat belt, if there is a frontal collision, the inertia will cause the passenger to be thrown forward, even through the windshield and thrown out. In addition, it can also be dangerous for the person sitting in the front seat when the passengers in the car collide with each other.
In case of a car rollover, the people inside the car will be thrown out of the car on both sides of the mirror, the impact is too strong and the windows will not be able to hold the people inside the car.
Therefore, in the event of a car accident, people inside the car wearing seat belts are usually not affected to life, or even injured. Meanwhile, people who "ignore" seat belts are often injured, the severity of which depends on the speed and angle of impact.

Rear seat passengers also pose a danger to front seat passengers if they do not wear seat belts (tested at a crash speed of 40 km/h). |
"Bypass" the front seat belt warning system
Normally, new car models are equipped with a seat belt warning system, which can emit a sound to alert the driver and passengers that they have not fastened their seat belts when sitting in the seat. This is standard equipment on cars in some markets, some cars only warn the driver's seat, some cars will warn both the front seats and the rear seats.
However, many car users find this warning system very "annoying", simply because they are uncomfortable when wearing a seat belt, including the driver. And an accessory has been born to meet the needs of these customers, which is the seat belt replacement pin, which fits directly into the available slot on the car.

Accessories that "bypass" the safety warning system on cars are widely sold in the Vietnamese market. |
In fact, many Vietnamese people do not have the habit of wearing seat belts when sitting in cars, this mentality still follows them until they own a car, they are afraid of hearing the ear-piercing sound every time the car rolls without wearing a seat belt. Therefore, this accessory is like a "solution" to fool the safety warning system on the car.
To meet customer tastes, many auto accessory stores also sell many types of "safety pins" displaying the logos of popular auto brands in Vietnam. Many people do not know that this accessory will become a "deadly" weapon if the car is unfortunately involved in an accident while in operation.
Some drivers today even fasten their seat belts behind their backs, which causes the car's airbag sensor system to misunderstand and deploy the airbag when it is not needed, which is very dangerous in the event of an accident.
The importance of seatbelts
The seat belt system in a car is even more important than the airbag, it can save the lives of the occupants in the event of a collision. If the passenger does not wear a seat belt, the effect and efficiency of the airbag is almost non-existent, and the airbag system in some car models does not even work if the seat belt is not worn.
Seat belts were invented in the late 1800s and are now optional and standard equipment in cars. Seat belts protect car occupants by restraining them in the event of an accident that could send them flying toward the windshield. They also hold the occupants in place in the event of hard braking or a collision. Airbags protect the driver from impact with the steering wheel, dashboard, and windows, helping to reduce injuries if the car crashes, shakes, or flips over.

The seat belt system in a car is even more important than the air bag. |
According to statistics, people who are in an accident but are wearing a seat belt have a better chance of avoiding injury. Many places in the world have strict regulations on wearing seat belts in cars, whether in the front or back seats, especially for children. People who are not wearing seat belts are not only at risk of being injured, but can also injure other people in the car. In the event of an accident, people who are not wearing seat belts can be thrown in the car or even out of the car, causing injury to other passengers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts reduce injuries by about 50% in serious crashes. Airbags are provided in vehicles as a secondary safety device but are no less important. Airbags combined with seat belts provide the best protection for adults.
Under the new regulation, both the driver and the passenger (in a position equipped with a seat belt) who do not wear a seat belt will be fined:
- Fine from 800,000 - 1 million VND: Drivers not wearing seat belts while driving on the road; Carrying passengers in cars without wearing seat belts (in locations equipped with seat belts) while the car is running.
- Fine from 300,000 - 500,000 VND: People transported in cars do not wear seat belts (in locations equipped with seat belts) while the car is moving.
From 1/1/2018, both the driver and passengers in any position in the vehicle must wear a seat belt (where seat belts are equipped) while the vehicle is moving. Failure to comply will result in the above penalty.
