Brazil crushed Spain 3-0 to win the Confederations Cup.

July 1, 2013 10:05

Brazil dethroned reigning world champions Spain with an impressive 3-0 victory in the Confederations Cup final at the Maracana stadium, securing their fifth title in this pre-World Cup tournament.

Fred's brace and Neymar's goal have boosted the confidence of the Yellow-Green team as they head towards conquering the World Cup next summer.

Fred and Neymar unleashed a barrage of shots at the Spanish goal, leading Brazil to victory.

Meanwhile, this painful defeat not only ended Spain's 29-match unbeaten streak in official competitions, but also served as a wake-up call for coach Vicente del Bosque and his players, with only a year left until the 2014 World Cup.

The score in the final was opened in the second minute after a shot from Fred. Just before the end of the first half, Neymar sent the Maracana stadium into a frenzy with a world-class goal.

At the start of the second half, Fred crushed all efforts of the reigning European and world champions with his fifth goal of the tournament.

Spain's humiliating night was capped off by Gerard Pique's red card in the 68th minute for fouling Neymar, his soon-to-be Barcelona teammate.

Spain could have also left the field with a consolation goal, but Sergio Ramos missed a penalty, leaving the European team to leave in humiliation.

Earlier, Italy had also salvaged some honor for Europe by defeating Uruguay on penalties in the third-place match, after the two teams drew 2-2 in regular time (Amigos and Diamanti scored for Italy, Edinson Cavani scored both goals for Uruguay, the penalty shootout score was 3-2).
