(Baonghean)With the goal of gathering and attracting students to healthy and beneficial activities during the summer, while simultaneously raising the sense of responsibility of young people towards themselves, their families, and the community, and helping them stay away from social evils, youth union branches in the province are implementing many meaningful activities.

Holding a mini loudspeaker to guide nearly 100 children lined up to learn the dance moves of the "Drum Dance" song at the People's Committee office of Quang Trung ward, Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Secretary of the Youth Union of Quang Trung ward, Vinh City, enthusiastically said: "Since the beginning of summer, all the neighborhoods in the ward have implemented folk dance classes. This is a new activity that attracts a large number of children and junior and senior high school students, and is supported and encouraged by parents. Besides the dance classes, the Youth Union executive committees in the neighborhoods of Quang Trung ward have come up with many good initiatives to gather children and students to participate in summer activities such as organizing morning exercise classes, mobilizing children to clean up the environment on Saturdays, selecting outstanding children for the neighborhood football team; selecting children who sing well and dance beautifully to participate in classes at the People's Committee office on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings,..."

In Hoa Tien hamlet, Hung Loc commune, in the last days of June, children were enthusiastically gathering to take a quiz on "The 60-Year History of Hung Loc Commune." This is an important part of the summer activity program launched by the Commune Youth Union Executive Committee. Duong Xuan Hoa, Secretary of the Hoa Tien hamlet Youth Union, said: "In just a short time, nearly 100 children and junior high school students have participated in writing quizzes, with many entries being of good quality and meticulously prepared." Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, Secretary of the Hung Loc Commune Youth Union, said that nearly 1000 children and Youth Union members in the commune have registered for summer activities. After almost a month of implementing the summer activity program in the hamlets, most of them are now enthusiastically participating. “The enthusiasm and energy of the children during this summer contributed to the success of the commune's Sports Festival as well as other campaigns and propaganda activities of the Youth Union Executive Committee. Furthermore, the summer activities also help children and students avoid social evils and the temptations of violent and unhealthy games on the internet…,” affirmed Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh.

According to Mr. Duong Hoang Vu, Deputy Secretary of the Nghe An Provincial Youth Union: A new feature in this year's summer activities is that the executive committees of the district, city, and town youth unions are proactively linking the content of activities to the practical situation of their localities and employing creative, beneficial, and effective methods to attract a large number of children and students to participate. For example, the executive committees of the Yen Thanh, Nam Dan, Do Luong, Tan Ky, Thanh Chuong, Hung Nguyen districts and Vinh City are organizing free swimming lessons for children and students as the number of child drownings is increasing; the executive committees of the commune youth unions in many districts are linking summer activities with new rural development programs such as mobilizing children and students to participate in environmental protection, keeping their living areas clean, and organizing union members to participate in dredging irrigation canals; some communes and towns have integrated competitions to learn about local history and traditions into the summer activities.

While gathering young people for summer activities is relatively easy in cities, towns, and coastal districts, it presents a significant challenge in mountainous and highland districts. For a long time, during summer vacation, students have followed their parents to the fields, not participating in local youth organizations. Faced with this situation, the Provincial Youth Union is working closely with district youth unions such as Kỳ Sơn, Tương Dương, Con Cuông, Quế Phong, Quỳ Châu, and Quỳ Hợp to find ways to attract young people to participate in summer activities. Initially, the youth union executive committees in these communes will organize football tournaments, competitions on team rituals, and traditional games such as throwing the "con" (a type of ball), carving furrows, stick fighting, and bamboo pole dancing to engage the children.

According to Lo Van Giap, an official from the Tuong Duong District Youth Union: "Despite our best efforts to gather children and students to participate in summer activities, achieving results is not easy. After school, children are often caught up in work in the fields, with their parents, and don't want to go to school. In remote villages, the dropout rate after each summer break is often directly proportional to the rate of children missing summer activities. To address this situation, the youth union branches in 18 communes and towns are currently sending people to each house to encourage children to participate in summer activities, such as Thai language classes and traditional games."

According to Mr. Duong Hoang Vu: For summer activities to be highly effective and attract a large number of children and students, in addition to the efforts of grassroots youth union officials, active participation from parents and local authorities at all levels is needed. The annual summer activity program is not only an opportunity to gather and attract young people to participate in activities organized by youth unions and associations, but it is also a truly healthy, beneficial, and vibrant playground that helps them stay away from social vices during the summer. At the same time, it is an opportunity to raise awareness and responsibility of the entire society in protecting, caring for, and educating the younger generation. Improving the quality of summer activities is absolutely essential and is the responsibility of each family, organization, local government, and the young people themselves.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tra My - Hung Dung - Vinh City: “Every year, I always try to give my children a longer summer break after a hard year of studying. However, leaving them at home without supervision makes me uneasy while I'm at work. When I asked my child about their summer interests, they wanted to learn many things, like chess, swimming, and even the organ. But finding a place for them to learn was a headache for me. Most of the private places I looked at had very appealing advertisements, but when I researched the teachers, I wasn't entirely confident. After much deliberation, I finally enrolled my child in drawing and organ classes at the Vietnam-Germany Children's Cultural Center.”

Mr. Tran Ngoc Duy from Block 6, Cua Nam Ward: “During the summer, I always want my children to have age-appropriate playgrounds, but there are almost no activities in the local area that attract young children, only a weekly activity session at the block's cultural center with physical games. Therefore, deciding what subjects to study and where to study during the summer is something I'm very concerned about. I contacted Viet Tam Center and learned that they offer many programs such as calligraphy, life skills, and English classes at various levels. The life skills class has sessions from Monday to Friday and all-day classes on Saturday and Sunday, mainly focusing on training children to be confident, assertive, and proactive in communication. So I enrolled my child to give them a 'playground'.”

Mr. Le Hong Vich - Deputy Director of the Vietnam-Germany Children's Cultural Center: “This year, many new centers for children have opened with many attractive learning programs. Given this situation, in addition to the reputable teaching staff of the Cultural Center, we have had to recruit many reputable collaborators who have received specialized training at prestigious national universities. The Vietnam-Germany Children's Cultural Center has long been a cradle for discovering and nurturing talents in the province, so subjects such as organ, painting, dance, and vocal music are all chosen by parents and students to study here. Although the number of students enrolling at the Cultural Center this year is not as high as last year, there are still about 1000 students.”
