Mrs. Melania sued the Daily Mail for publishing false information that defamed her. |
In a lawsuit against the British newspaper Daily Mail, First Lady Melania Trump claimed that the article titled: “The nude photo, and the visa questions that will never go away: The dark past of Mr. Trump’s Slovenian wife” published on August 19, 2016, published false information, damaging her personal honor and business reputation.
The article detailed that her successful career as a professional model in the 1990s was a hoax, and that she was instead a “high-class escort” in the “sex trade.” In a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Melania’s side claimed that the information was completely false and offensive to others: “The client is not an escort or prostitute of any kind.”
The lawsuit also stated that “the defamatory information in the article degraded her image, making it difficult for her to perform her duties as First Lady of the United States.”
Additionally, the article has caused the First Lady’s Melania brand, which sells jewelry, accessories, and skin care products, “to suffer significant losses and miss out on important business opportunities.” “The economic damage to our client’s brand as a result of the Daily Mail article is in the millions of dollars,” said Charles Harder, an attorney representing Melania Trump.
The Daily Mail has yet to comment on the matter.
Previously, Mrs. Melania also filed a lawsuit against the Daily Mail in a Maryland court for the newspaper's violations, but according to a source, the court refused to pursue the case. Immediately after being sued, the Daily Mail removed the article from its website but has not issued an official apology.
