Proposal for a park named after Fidel Castro in Quang Tri

The proposed park is the one under construction in the center of Dong Ha city, where leader Fidel Castro once visited and stood heroically on a tank.

On the afternoon of November 29, Quang Tri Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Van Hung led a delegation of the province to pay tribute to leader Fidel Castro at the Cuban Embassy in Hanoi.

During his lifetime, leader Fidel Castro made a historic trip to the liberated zone of Quang Tri in September 1973. This is considered a special mark of Vietnam - Cuba friendship during the fierce years of bombs and bullets.

Speaking to Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Herminio Lopez Diaz, Secretary Nguyen Van Hung, on behalf of the Party Committee and People's Council of Quang Tri province, sent his deepest condolences to the country and people of Cuba.

Mr. Hung said that in order to commemorate the merits of Leader Fidel Castro as well as his affection for the people of Quang Tri and at the same time wish to strengthen the Vietnam - Cuba relationship, the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee has the desire and has reported to the Secretariat for permission to name the park that the province is building in the city center, where Fidel once came and stood heroically on a tank.

Talking to Tuoi Tre about the proposal for a park named after Fidel Castro, Secretary Nguyen Van Hung said the province is currently clearing the land and is expected to start construction this year.

"This idea came up in 2013 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Fidel's visit to Quang Tri. At that time, we reported to the Cuban Embassy and the Central Youth Union. I think this is the right time to realize this wish. Yesterday, I signed a document to send to the Secretariat, but whether it is approved or not depends on the superiors," Mr. Hung told Tuoi Tre.

Mr. Hung added that if approved by the Secretariat, the construction progress of the park named after Fidel Castro in Dong Ha is expected to last more than a year from the start date.
