Julian Melchiorri, a biotechnology researcher living in London, England, designed a special chandelier called the Chandelier Exhale that can clean the air while also creating light for your home, according to Tree Hugger.
The chandelier includes "glass leaves" containing green algae that are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2), while also providing more oxygen for you to breathe. It's like an air-cleaning houseplant.
Melchiorri has spent years working with different organisms to develop artificial leaves in similar projects. Now he is looking to combine biomaterials with biomimetic and synthetic biology to help address sustainability issues.
Melchiorri says the world’s population has grown dramatically over the past century. Humans are burning fossil fuels and destroying plant life, creating major changes in the atmosphere and climate. Photosynthetic materials could revolutionize urban environments on both an architectural and product scale by filtering the air we breathe, absorbing CO2, producing valuable biological products using only water and light.
By looking to nature as a reference and incorporating its lessons into the built environment, we can do much to address long-term sustainability, as well as learn to live in harmony with our planet.
