The incident occurred at 10:00 a.m. on June 15, in Ngoc Thuong hamlet, Thanh Ngoc commune (Thanh Chuong, Nghe An). According to relatives of the victims, early that morning, three children Nguyen Trong Hau (15 years old), Le Huu Hieu (14 years old) and Le Van Giap (12 years old), all residing in Ngoc Thuong hamlet, let their buffalo graze on the banks of the Gang river.
While herding the buffalo home, the children did not take a detour like before but instead let the buffalo wade across the river using a temporary bridge as a shortcut. While wading in the river, they encountered a deep stream and drowned. A young man named Trinh Van Hieu was bathing the buffalo nearby and jumped in, saving Hau and Giap. After that, someone helped and shouted for help. People from Ngoc Thuong hamlet who were having a neighborhood meeting heard and also jumped into the river to save them.
Hieu was pulled to the river bank by locals not long after, but it was too late. His body was taken home by his family. Hau and Giap are still in a state of confusion and fear.

It is known that Hieu is an 8A student at Thanh Ngoc Secondary School, a good student, a good student, the youngest son in a family of 4 children. Hieu's father - Mr. Le Huu Hung is working far away.
Locals said that the Gang River section flowing through Ngoc Thuong hamlet is small but quite dangerous, with drowning accidents often occurring. Families around this area should remind their children when they are herding buffalo or playing on the riverbank.
