Can the admission scores of top universities decrease compared to 2017?
This year's national high school exam is said to be much more difficult than last year's, which will affect the standard scores for university admission.
At the end of this year's national high school exam, many candidates and parents are worried about the exam scores and especially the admission scores of universities.
Will the test scores be low?
Commenting on this year's national high school exam, many candidates and teachers said that the exam was highly classified, but too difficult and long.
Professor Nguyen Huu Viet Hung, a leading expert in Algebra at Hanoi National University, also said: “90 minutes is not enough for me to do 50 questions on the exam. I also do not believe that any high school math teacher can solve 50 questions on the exam within 90 minutes. There are many questions that require calculations in 10 to 15 minutes.”
Many candidates said that this year's exam was much more difficult than in 2017. |
According to Mr. Lai Tien Minh, a Math teacher at Luong The Vinh High School (Hanoi): “To achieve a score of 4-5 points, which is enough to graduate, is not difficult. However, to be considered for university admission, candidates must do it very quickly. In general, this year's exam is not much more difficult than the sample exam that the Ministry has previously released, but it is quite long. The common score range will be between 4-6 points. Really good students can achieve 7-8 points, and there will not be as many scores above 8 as in previous years.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, Math team of Tuyensinh 24/7 system, commented that: The exam has a wide range of questions, a deep level of questioning, and high classification. The level of questions in recognition and understanding accounts for about 20-25 questions and average students can get a score of 4-5.5 points. Students with good academic ability can solve the first 35 questions and get a score of about 7 to 7.4. Only truly good students can do it correctly and can get a score above 9. This year, the number of students getting a perfect score will not be much.
Not only Math, but also other exams, especially Literature, there are many opinions that the exam is too difficult.
Ms. Ngo Thi Lan Anh, a Literature teacher at Tran Phu High School, Hanoi, said that the exam was guaranteed to include knowledge from both grades 11 and 12. The questions in the exam were quite good and highly classified. However, to complete this exam in 120 minutes is a bit too much for students. In the extended questions, candidates are required to think and relate the knowledge they have learned to real life. The part about thinking about the mission of awakening the country's potential of each individual is macro.
With the level of questions like this year, teachers predict that this exam season will no longer have "rain of 10s" like last year. Instead, the common score for the Natural Science and Social Science exams will be from 6-7.
The Foreign Language exam has a score range of 5-7 points. The Literature exam is open-ended, so the scoring is also open.
Will university entrance scores decrease?
Dr. Bui Duc Trieu, Head of Training Department, National Economics University said: “Currently, there is no score distribution, so it is not possible to accurately predict the standard scores of schools. However, with the exam being more standardized, including the 11th and 12th grade programs, students may find it more difficult. If it is true that public opinion and many teachers' comments that the exam is difficult, then this year's exam scores will certainly not be high, there will not be as many 9s and 10s as last year, so the standard scores for universities will also decrease in general."
According to Mr. Trieu, the decrease in average scores of subjects this year will greatly affect the benchmark scores of the top schools, while the middle and lower top schools will not be affected much.
“This year, the middle-ranking schools can take 15-18 points. The top schools will be affected a lot, especially schools with standard scores of 25 or higher this year will definitely have to reduce.”
The head of the Training Department also predicted that the average score for admission to the National Economics University this year may decrease, but it will not decrease significantly.
Evaluating this year's exam, Mr. Trieu said that the exam questions were highly differentiated, and at the same time, the priority score was reduced to make it more favorable for schools. It is predicted that there will no longer be a phenomenon of 30 points/3 subjects still failing the university entrance exam like in 2017. From there, it will create fairness, so that schools can choose truly suitable candidates.
Dr. Tran Van Top, Vice Principal of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that, based on the feedback from candidates, this year's exam has more difficult content than previous years. Therefore, the number of high scores is also likely to be lower than in 2017. The decrease in the score range may lead to lower admission scores for schools. However, it is currently impossible to predict how much the decrease will be.
“The average score this year will be around 6-7 points, but up to this point, no school can predict how much the standard score will decrease,” said Dr. Top.
However, the Vice Principal of Hanoi University of Science and Technology also commented that the school's "hot" majors such as Automation Control, Information Technology, Electromechanics, and Telecommunications Electronics all had the highest standard scores in previous years. This year, if there is a decrease, it will only be a slight decrease, not significant.
“In 2015 and 2016, the exam scores were not the same as in 2017, but these majors still required around 25 points. So, this year the scores must be similar, and the specifics depend on the number of candidates applying. However, these majors always have a lot of applications,” Dr. Tran Van Top informed.
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Truong Ngoc Nam, Director of the Academy of Journalism and Communication in Hanoi, said: “With the highly differentiated exam, the average score this year will be low. Candidates who do not apply for university admission based on Math seem to have an advantage because this year's Math exam is quite difficult. As for journalism, candidates will have to take the exam and add an aptitude score, so the average score will be relatively high, possibly equal to last year.”
Dr. Nguyen Dao Tung, Head of Training Management Department, Academy of Finance, said that in 2018, the priority score of candidates decreased compared to previous years, combined with the exam being more differentiated, so the standard score may decrease compared to 2017.
Head of Training Department of Thuyloi University, Nguyen Tuan Anh, said that this year, the admission score to the school may be the same or slightly lower than last year, depending on the combination.
"Math is considered more difficult, but the other subjects are still unclear. We will wait for the exam results to make a more detailed assessment."
According to the Ministry of Education and Training, by July 10 at the latest, the Examination Councils will publish the exam results and complete the comparison of exam results by July 11 at the latest.
The examination council will announce and notify the candidates of the results on July 11 and must report the preliminary results of the high school graduation recognition by July 15 at the latest. The announcement of the results of the high school graduation recognition will be made no later than July 17./.
