Nghe An salt farmers spread tarpaulins to produce clean salt with outstanding efficiency.
(Baonghean.vn) - Tan Thinh Salt Service Cooperative, An Hoa Commune, Quynh Luu District (Nghe An) applies a new method, spreading HDPE tarpaulin on the crystallization drying cell floor to produce clean salt. Thereby increasing productivity and value on the same area unit.

Many salt production areas are covered with tarpaulins to increase productivity and ensure clean salt without impurities. |
To help salt farmers preserve and promote their traditional profession and receive financial support from the Provincial People's Committee of 3 million VND for 60 square meters, An Hoa commune has directed Tan Thinh Salt Cooperative to build a salt production model using HDPE tarpaulin technology.
In October 2016, when starting to implement, the cooperative encountered many difficulties due to the people's fear of new things. However, after being trained in techniques and especially when putting them into use, they found that the new method had many advantages, reducing the effort and cost of annual salt repair; the high heat of the tarpaulin made the salt crystallize quickly, so productivity also increased; the salt was clean and free of impurities.

Spreading tarpaulin to produce salt is easy to harvest and can increase production time during the year. |
In particular, when using tarpaulin, salt can be produced all year round in mild sunny or windy weather conditions for the salt to crystallize. Therefore, from 26 households participating in the initial model with an area of 32,000 m2, Tan Thinh village now has 200 households (nearly 100%) registered to buy tarpaulin to produce together using this method.
Mr. Ho Van Ly's family is one of the first households to implement the HDPE tarpaulin salt production model with an area of 150 m2, the total cost is over 11 million VND, of which the State has supported nearly 7 million VND. During the process, he was closely followed by the cooperative staff to give detailed instructions. If well preserved, this tarpaulin can be used for 5-6 years.

Many salt farmers expand the area of salt production. |
According to the Cooperative's calculations, this method will increase productivity by 10% per unit area and increase the price by 2-3 times compared to salt made in the conventional way. Currently, An Hoa commune is encouraging salt farmers in the remaining 3 salt cooperatives to convert the model from traditional salt production to tarpaulin salt.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quyet - Chairman of An Hoa Commune People's Committee said: "An Hoa has 400 households producing salt with 140 hectares. When implementing the model of spreading tarps, people clearly saw the improvement in quality and productivity. Salt produced in this way is guaranteed to be clean and can compete with other types of salt. Therefore, we plan to replicate this model throughout the commune."
