In September, many car models had price reductions that shook the market. Besides the reason of stimulating demand, car manufacturers continuously launched incentive programs to clear inventory, creating the premise for launching new versions.

At the beginning of September, the Vietnamese auto market was surprised when the price of Honda CR-V cars decreased by 110 - 170 million VND, depending on the version. Compared to Honda's suggested price, the 5-seat SUV CR-V has "evaporated" by nearly 300 million VND.

Honda CR-V started the price war in September, but this is also the model that caused the most scandal.

Following the CR-V price reduction trend, Mitsubishi Vietnam has also aggressively reduced the price of the Outlander SUV by up to 220 million VND. Mitsubishi Outlander is a car model imported completely from Japan. This is also one of the car models with the lowest sales in the Vietnamese market in recent times.

With record low sales, Mitsubishi has drastically reduced the Outlander model, with prices ranging from 117 to 220 million VND.

Specifically,Outlander version 2.0 STDCurrently priced at dealers at only 755 million VND, 220 million VND lower than the suggested price (suggested price is 975 million VND).

Meanwhile, the remaining 2 versions are2.0 CVT and 2.4 CVTadjusted down 117 million VND, the selling price at the dealers is 1.006 billion and 1.158 billion VND respectively.

Not only the 5-seat SUV Outlander, Mitsubishi also heavily discounted another 7-seat SUV, the Pajero Sport, by up to 180 million VND.

Honda CR-V started the price war in September, but this is also the model that caused the most scandal.

Specifically, in September, the selling price of the versionPajero Sport 4x4reduced by up to 180 million VND, the actual selling price at dealers decreased from 1.538 to 1.358 billion VND. Meanwhile, the 4x2 version applied a reduction of 156 million VND, down from 1.355 billion to 1.199 billion VND. This is a record price reduction for this car line since it was sold in Vietnam.

According to the manufacturer, the record low price of Pajero Sport is only applied in September with an unlimited number of cars. This is considered a strong move by Mitsubishi when it is determined to attack its rival Toyota Fortuner.

Next isSuzuki's B-class sedan - Ciaz. This September, to attract domestic consumers, Suzuki Ciaz has a very strong discount program in the second half of September and lasts until the end of October 2017. Specifically, when buying Ciaz during this time, customers will have up to 92 million VND deducted directly from the bill.

The actual selling price of Ciaz at dealers is 488 million VND (including VAT). This is also the record low price of Ciaz since it was put into business in Vietnam.

Not only the above car models, the domestic auto market also received some news of price reductions under 100 million VND from Toyota, Chevrolet, Mazda or Nissan.

Stimulate demand or clear inventory?

According to representatives of some car manufacturers, the sudden sharp drop in car prices in September is believed to stimulate market demand during the ghost month and gain market share before the car import tax reduction period in 2018.

It sounds reasonable, however, looking back at the beginning of September when Honda "played with" customers, many people will pay attention.

In early September, the domestic auto market was shaken up when the Honda CR-V had an unprecedentedly low price. However, after only a few days, Honda's aggressive discount campaign revealed many shortcomings related to the selling price or the car deposit process.

Specifically, just a few days later, Honda Vietnam announced to stop the discount program for CR-V, the selling price of CR-V at dealers was not consistent, after a few days it increased again; some dealers even sold at a higher price than Honda's suggested price.

In addition, some agents receive deposits from customers in advance, but a few days later unilaterally cancel the contract and claim that just returning the money is... enough (!).

In September, the selling price of the Pajero Sport version was reduced by 180 million VND.

Many customers believe that Honda's drastic reduction in the price of the CR-V SUV is to clear inventory, creating the premise for the launch of a new version early next year. Meanwhile, Honda Vietnam has not made many comments related to this issue and has responded very generally.

Not only CR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander also experienced a "sold out" period after the price reduction. A Mitsubishi dealer said that after only a few days, the 2.0 STD version is receiving quite a lot of orders from domestic consumers.

Explaining the above reason, the representative of this unit stated that Outlander is the only model in the SUV segment imported completely from Japan with extremely good quality.

Many leaked sources show that the Outlander price reduction is to clear inventory and a new version of the SUV will be introduced early next year. However, Mitsubishi dealers refused to answer this question.

Besides, some car models such as Suzuki Ciaz, Chevrolet Colorodo or Captiva... have reduced prices to compete with rivals.

Whatever the reason, the current drastic price reductions bring certain benefits to consumers. However, to avoid a situation like the Honda CR-V, car manufacturers need to be more transparent about their incentive programs.
