Athletics sets another record.
On December 27th, athletics competitions began and new records were set, especially the men's 5,000m record by Nguyen Van Lai, with the Army team truly causing a surprise.

Besides the medals and records set in the men's and women's 100m and 5,000m races by athletes like Vu Thi Huong and Truong Thanh Hang, the athletics competition continued this afternoon at Chi Lang Stadium with the semi-finals of the men's and women's 800m, the final of the men's 5,000m, and the final of the women's high jump.

Awards were presented to the athletes in the men's 100m event.
The biggest surprise was Nguyen Van Lai's gold medal in the 5,000m race with a time of 14'38''92, setting a new national record. In the women's long jump, Bui Thi Nhung from Hai Phong also won gold with a performance of 1.80m. The men's and women's 4 x 400m relay events have also concluded.
The swimming events also included a series of finals such as the men's 100m breaststroke, men's 4 x 200m freestyle relay, women's 400m freestyle, men's and women's 50m butterfly, etc., with many new national and Games records being set.
Athlete Hoang Quy Phuoc from host city Da Nang won another gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke and continued to break the Games record with a time of 58.30 seconds. Thus, as of the end of yesterday, the Hanoi delegation still leads the overall medal standings with 398 medals of all kinds, including 161 gold and 119 silver. Ho Chi Minh City is in second place with 321 medals, including 109 gold, and the Army delegation remains in third place with a total of 201 medals.
