President Donald Trump's statement on Jerusalem is not conducive to resolving the situation in the Middle East, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

On December 6, Mr. Trump announced his recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and signed a document to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to this city.

"Worrying problems, tensions have arisen in the Middle East peace process and in the region after the US President's statement. We believe that this decision is not in the best interests of anyone in the Middle East peace process, but on the contrary, as we have seen, it leads first of all to a split in the international community," Peskov told reporters.

The press secretary of the Russian head of state stressed that not everyone agreed with such a decision of the US President and that it caused a rather strong reaction in Ramallah and Palestine in general. Therefore, Russia reserves its concerns about this decision.

"What should be done? Continue to look for political and diplomatic ways to resolve it, although the situation will certainly become much more complicated?" - Mr. Peskov said.
