The Harry Potter actor is in intensive care after a horrific car crash that left him with a broken neck and punctured lung.

Jim Tavare, who appeared in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, is suffering from a punctured lung, a broken neck and 15 cracked ribs among other injuries after the accident.

The 54-year-old actor tried to give a thumbs up in a photo posted on social media by his wife Laura to reassure fans.

The British actor moved to Los Angeles in 2008 after his breakout appearance on reality TV show Last Comic Standing, underwent two blood transfusions and required surgery.

His wife Laura announced the news on Facebook: "Jim asked me to let everyone know that he was in a serious car accident yesterday, a head-on collision. He is currently in the intensive care unit. He has 15 broken ribs, two fractures to his sternum, a punctured lung, multiple fractures to his right leg and a broken neck. He has had two blood transfusions and is set for surgery. This is reality, not drama."
