New adjustments in traffic laws that Vietnamese drivers need to know
Dedicated lane signs can accommodate multiple vehicles on one sign, wide roads do not require signs on both sides.
In official dispatch 8484 sent to the Traffic Police Department and other agencies, in addition to explaining"The residential area sign does not need to be repeated at the intersection", The Ministry of Transport also analyzed a number of other issues in Regulation 41/2016, which has caused much controversy between drivers and traffic police in recent times. Below are the specific contents.
1. Wide roads do not require additional signs on the left.
Standard 41/2016 states "On roads with two or more lanes in each direction, signs are hung on gantries or booms. In cases where they are not placed on gantries or booms, additional signs may be installed on the left side of the direction of traffic".

Speed limit signs on wide roads remain in effect. |
The Ministry of Transport believes that installing additional signs on the left is not mandatory for roads with two or more lanes in each direction. For wide but open roads with little traffic and limited funding, it is not necessary to install signs.
So if the driver enters a dual carriageway, the speed limit sign is only posted on the right side of the road, then this sign is still valid, it is not necessary to have it on the left side as well.
2. Dedicated lane signs can combine multiple types of vehicles
Sign R.412 is originally regulated in Standard 41 as one sign for each type of vehicle, but in reality, there are many road sections where vehicles are drawn together in one sign. Many drivers believe that this is not up to standard and therefore not valid.

Lane separation signs can group multiple types of vehicles. |
However, the Ministry believes that there are currently many routes where one lane can accommodate 2-3 types of vehicles, so combining the images of all vehicles into one sign is correct, making it easier to observe, arrange, and save costs. The size of the sign should be expanded to be proportional.
3. Some other regulations
Regarding the adjustments to Standard 41/2016, there are some other contents such as: the size of signs can be adjusted depending on the terrain, it is not necessary to place direction signs with prohibition signs, yellow road markings to separate two-way traffic, white lines to divide lanes in the same direction, but if new lines have not been drawn in time, drivers must follow the old regulations (yellow lines for roads outside residential areas, white lines in residential areas).
