Adjusting detailed planning of North Central seaport group

(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of November 11, the Provincial People's Committee worked with the Vietnam Maritime Administration on reviewing and adjusting the detailed planning of the North Central seaport group (group 2) for the period up to 2020, with a vision to 2030. Comrade Huynh Thanh Dien, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee chaired the meeting.

Currently, Cua Lo port area - a general port directly serving the Southeast Economic Zone of Nghe An province and is one of the gateways for transit goods for Laos and Northeast Thailand, receiving ships up to 20,000 DWT. Dong Hoi port area, a specialized port area directly serving thermal power plants, cement plants, construction materials plants and other concentrated industrial facilities, receiving ships up to 50,000 DWT. Ben Thuy and Cua Hoi local ports: satellite ports for the main port, receiving small vessels with a capacity of up to 2,000 DWT.

According to the plan, the goal of developing the North Central seaport is to synchronously and harmoniously combine general and specialized ports to promptly respond to the formation and development of key economic zones, industrial parks, industrial facilities focusing on electricity, mining, and petrochemical refining in the region such as Nghi Son Economic Zone, Southeast Nghe An Economic Zone, Dong Hoi Industrial Zone, Vung Ang Economic Zone; combining to attract and meet the demand for sea transport of Laos. Ensure the volume of goods through the port in the planning stages: 95 - 114 million tons in 2020; 159 - 196 million tons in 2030.

Regarding the planning of Nghe An seaport, Nam Cua Lo port area reviews and adjusts: the capacity to meet the expected cargo throughput of about 6.5 - 8 million tons/year in 2020; 14 - 15 million tons/year in 2030. Detailed planning, general wharf: new development at Nghi Thiet alluvial land for fully loaded 10,000 DWT ships; Development of connecting wharf outside wharf 4 for 20,000 - 30,000 DWT ships, prioritizing container cargo.

The North Cua Lo port area is reviewed and adjusted for development according to the actual needs of the Southeast Economic Zone; the Ben Thuy and Cua Hoi port areas retain their original roles. Capacity of 0.5 million tons/year by 2020. Detailed planning: a general port consisting of 4 wharves, for ships with a capacity of 1,000 - 2,000 DWT; gradually converting its function into a tourist port. For the Oil Port, gradually reduce operations towards ceasing operations.

Dong Hoi wharf area retains its role. The capacity to meet the volume of goods passing through according to the demand and investment capacity of Dong Hoi Industrial Park. The detailed planning until 2020 is for the number of wharfs to be 12, the throughput capacity from 2.9 - 3.5 million tons/year, the largest ship size is 30,000 DWT. By 2030, there will be 19 wharfs, the throughput capacity is 5.8 - 7 million tons, the largest ship size is 50,000 DWT.

At the meeting, representatives of the Vietnam Maritime Administration and meeting participants agreed with the proposal: Accelerate the construction of berths No. 5 and No. 6 to allow receiving ships up to 30,000 DWT to meet the needs of loading and unloading general cargo and containers for economic development; At the same time, study the upgrading of 375m of sand-blocking and wave-reducing dyke (Northern dyke) into a breakwater and a channel to allow receiving ships of 20,000 DWT fully loaded and 30,000 DWT partially loaded; Call for investment in developing a general wharf area at Nghi Thiet alluvial land to take advantage of the existing channel and gradually replace Ben Thuy wharf area; Develop DKC Petroleum Depot to gradually replace the existing Nghi Huong warehouse; Continue to invest in developing infrastructure (electricity, water, shipping channels...) at Dong Hoi wharf area to create conditions for attracting investment in building seaports serving industry: Vicem, Quynh Lap thermal power plant...
