In the autumn of 1945, when the entire nation was seething with the spirit of the General Uprising, there was a young man from Nghe An province who also harbored revolutionary fervor. His name was Bui Huy Giap. From the very beginning of his involvement in revolutionary activities, he determined that his life's path would be intertwined with the cause of national liberation. Throughout the resistance war against the French, the footprints of this revolutionary soldier were deeply imprinted in many areas, from his position as Secretary of the Party Committee of Van Kim commune to Deputy Head of the Security Department of the Nghe An Provincial Police. Those were the years of his vibrant, courageous youth, completely dedicated to a noble ideal.

But the nation had not yet fully achieved independence, and the country remained divided. In 1965, when the call for reinforcements to the South rang out, Bui Huy Giap, codenamed Ba Lam, without a moment's hesitation, set aside personal feelings, bid farewell to his homeland and loved ones, and plunged into the smoke-filled battlefield. In the heart of that soldier, love for his country was greater than anything else. That journey was not just a mission, but also a solemn vow: to fight for the reunification of the country, so that future generations would no longer have to live in the midst of war.

In the former My Tho province (now Dong Thap province), Deputy Head of the Provincial Security Department Ba Lam and his comrades bravely and resourcefully overcame fierce enemy sweeps. Deep within enemy territory, he and his comrades secretly built a revolutionary base, sowing seeds of hope for a victorious future. Three years of clandestine activity were three years of hardship and danger, but the heart of this soldier remained unwavering in its unwavering faith.

And then, that momentous occasion arrived. At dawn on the first day of the Lunar New Year, 1968, before the apricot and peach blossoms had even begun to bloom, the General Offensive and Uprising commenced. Mr. Ba Lam and his two comrades were unfortunately discovered and surrounded by the enemy. Amidst the rain of bombs and bullets, he made a decisive decision: he ordered his comrades to retreat to preserve their forces, while he fought valiantly alone. His gunfire echoed, a testament to the indomitable spirit of a communist. When the last bullets were gone, he managed to burn all the documents and destroy the radio to protect the secrets of the revolution to the very end. Captured and brutally tortured, yet unyielding, this soldier heroically sacrificed his life.

He passed away on New Year's Day, contributing to the eternal spring of the nation.

The pride of three generations

Patriotism and pride in the martyr Bui Huy Giap continue to be nurtured and fostered in the veins of future generations. His son and grandson are both outstanding soldiers, following in his footsteps on the path of serving the Fatherland.

His son is Lieutenant Colonel Bui Quang Vinh, former Deputy Head of the Nam Dan District Police Department, Nghe An Province. Speaking about his father, Lieutenant Colonel Bui Quang Vinh couldn't hide his emotion: “My father left home when I was still in my mother's womb. When I was three years old, my father passed away. Without a father, my mother single-handedly raised five siblings, including an older sister with a disability and an older brother who suffered a spinal injury in an accident. Our family faced extremely difficult circumstances. Through my mother's stories, I am very proud of my father and consider him a role model for overcoming hardship, self-improvement, and personal growth. That is also why I chose to dedicate myself to the police force.”

After years of yearning to find his father's grave, Lieutenant Colonel Bui Quang Vinh learned that his father had been assigned to support the former My Tho province, serving as Deputy Head of the Provincial Security Department. In 2007, with the help of the former Tien Giang Provincial Police (now Dong Thap province) and witnesses, he found his father's grave and brought his remains back for burial at the Vinh City Martyrs' Cemetery in Nghe An province.

Throughout his career, Lieutenant Colonel Bui Quang Vinh achieved three exceptionally outstanding accomplishments, receiving the Order of Merit from the President of Vietnam three times (for his work in patrolling, controlling, handling violations, and combating drug crimes); receiving 12 Certificates of Commendation; attending numerous conferences of exemplary individuals of the Ministry of Public Security; and being promoted to a higher rank twice…
