How much electricity does air conditioning consume during hot weather?
(Baonghean) - Research shows that in Vietnam, the cost of electricity for using air conditioners accounts for an average of about 40% of the total electricity consumption in a household.
During the hot season, due to continuous use of air conditioning, the amount of electricity consumed will increase by an average of about 50%. Therefore, during the hot season, using air conditioning properly will help users save a significant amount of electricity.
1. To save electricity, users need to set the best temperature between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius. The air conditioner temperature should also differ from the outdoor temperature by 10 to 12 degrees Celsius to be reasonable in terms of electricity consumption. Setting the temperature low does not make the air conditioner cool faster, but only wastes electricity, damages the machine and is not good for health. In case it is not cool enough, users can turn on a fan in combination, which will help save about 2 to 3% of electricity compared to turning on the air conditioner at a lower temperature.

2. For rooms using air conditioning, experts also recommend placing a small bowl of water to both spread cool air and help prevent dry skin.Users also need to be careful with humidifiers when using them in air-conditioned rooms, because if not controlled, the humidity can be too high, causing harm to health.
3. Dirty air conditioners or air conditioners that have been used for too long are also causes of wasted electricity. After a long period of use, both the condenser and evaporator have softened fins, while the refrigerant gas may be depleted, the engine oil may be dirty, and the mechanical parts may be worn out. The cooling efficiency may be reduced by 10 to 15%. Proper maintenance and cleaning will help prolong the life of the air conditioner.
4. Air conditioners using inverter compressors save significantly more electricity than conventional air conditioners. For home and small office use, inverter air conditioners save more electricity than conventional air conditioners, up to 28% of electricity. Only in cases of very short usage or air conditioners that have to run continuously at 100% capacity, will inverter air conditioners not be effective, and even consume more electricity due to having to "feed" the inverter.
5. Air conditioning still consumes electricity when not in use.Electronic devices such as fans, air conditioners, and TVs, when turned off, the control panel and some components still have to operate in standby mode and consume energy. With air conditioners, if the power supply is not completely cut off, the amount of electricity consumed is about 8 to 20 Watts per hour, equivalent to a small LED light bulb.
