US Marine Corps Commandant General Robert Neller had to answer tough questions from US senators on March 15 about the nude photo scandal shared on the Facebook page of former US Marines and other websites.

General Neller has called the actions of Marines in cyberbullying female service members unacceptable.

Speaking before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Mr. Neller said the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the allegations and will hold accountable any service members involved in this incident.

However, some senators expressed dissatisfaction with the above response of the US military leadership.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand asked General Neller to specify how many commanders would be held responsible for this incident.

In response to Congresswoman Gillibrand's "hard" question, General Neller replied, "I am the one responsible. I am the commander. I owe this."

General Neller acknowledged that the sharing of nude photos was linked to a broader cultural issue that needed to be addressed.

On March 10, Mr. Neller asked female victims of the sharing of nude photos of soldiers on social media to come forward and help identify the perpetrators. That same day, he said that “fewer than” 10 female victims had been identified.

An estimated 30,000 people have visited a Facebook page called Marine United, a private Facebook group created several years ago to support Marine Corps veterans dealing with post-combat trauma. A “link” shared on the Facebook page leads to an internet archive where some members of the group have posted nude photos of female Marines.

General Neller said that since the allegations were made, both the link and the external website have been removed.

It is said that about 500 members of the Marine United page clicked on the link leading to nude photos./.
