Treating Schizophrenia with Food

A high-fat diet, trusted by bodybuilders, is effective in treating schizophrenia.

This diet is called Ketogenic, or keto for short, and helps you lose weight by consuming less starch and more fat. The purpose of this diet is to force your body to burn excess fat for energy. To achieve this, you need to increase your fat intake and reduce starch to the lowest level.

Starches are converted to Glucose and the body uses them as its main source of energy. Excess Glucose is converted to Glycogen and stored in the liver for future use. When the “reservoirs” are full, they “spill over” and are stored as fat or lipids.

According to a study published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet in 2008, children who followed the Ketogenic diet had one-third fewer seizures than children on other diets.

According to the Daily Mail, Australian experts believe that Keto can do this because fat will provide the body with an alternative source of energy to sugar - found in many carbohydrates. Normal people will get energy from this sugar, but schizophrenic patients cannot do that.

Associate Professor Zoltan Sarnyai of James Cook University, Australia said: "Most of the energy is accumulated from fat, so the best diet for people with schizophrenia includes butter, cheese, salmon. Initially, this diet will be applied to patients as a medicine, so that doctors can control the amount of food used."

The team also found that mice on the keto diet gained less weight and had lower blood sugar levels than those on a regular diet. Therefore, Keto may help prevent weight gain, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

The researchers will test their findings on other animals in preparation for clinical trials with humans.
