The book caused controversy because of its illustrations of Vietnamese generals, reminiscent of those in the Three Kingdoms game or Japanese manga, but its publication was suspended for a different reason.

According to press reports, the book "Famous Generals in the History of the Nation," edited by Nguyen Hoang Diep and Duc Thong, published and distributed by the Culture and Information Publishing House, has been found by the Publishing, Printing and Distribution Department to have not been submitted for copyright registration.

In a document dated December 8th, the Publishing Department requested the Culture and Information Publishing House to: “First, suspend the publication of the book and provide an explanation for its publication and distribution. Second, submit copies for legal deposit as required by law. Third, submit a written report to the Publishing Department before December 18th, 2014.”

Previously, the press reported that the book contained numerous illustrations of kings and famous generals such as Ngo Quyen, Le Chan, Ly Thuong Kiet, Tran Hung Dao, Quang Trung, Bui Thi Xuan, etc., in a clumsy, disorganized, and unsystematic way. The book's content has not been verified; it lists 46 generals, with one-third of its content dedicated to General Vo Nguyen Giap.
