To ensure the safety of children's toys, prevent health hazards, and stabilize the market during the Tet holiday, the Southern Product Quality Management Sub-Department, in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Sub-Department, launched an inspection campaign targeting businesses selling children's toys in the area. At numerous toy stores in districts 6, Tan Binh, Tan Phu, Binh Thanh, and Phu Nhuan, authorities collected samples of toys with questionable origins for quality testing.

Test results from the Center for Standards, Metrology and Quality 3 showed that the inflatable ball product contained phthalate levels (a type of substance that can cause cancer, affect brain development, and even cause infertility in children) exceeding the regulated limit by 400 times.

In addition, the Product Quality Management Department announced that two doll samples randomly taken from children's toy stores in Hanoi contained phthalate levels exceeding the permitted limit. Related to this, authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have also urgently conducted quality checks on fruit-headed dolls being sold in several stores.

Be cautious when choosing toys for children.

To date, the children's toy market has detected four products containing phthalates exceeding the permitted standards, including: rocking horses, battery-operated remote-controlled toy cars (MH9996M), fruit-headed dolls, and inflatable balls.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Chemistry, the more colorful children's toys are, the higher the potential for toxicity. This is because the coloring solution used is not food coloring but industrial dye made from toxic chemicals such as chromium, lead, and mercury.

Plastic toys always contain phthalate plasticizers, which easily leach out of the base material and disperse into the body when exposed to heat. This can occur when children put the toys in their mouths or through inhalation, affecting male children whose reproductive systems are not yet fully developed, potentially leading to male infertility, feminization, or premature puberty in girls. Furthermore, phthalates significantly increase the risk of asthma and allergies in children.

Previously, market management forces from various teams and related units conducted inspections of children's toys in the city and discovered thousands of smuggled children's toys of various types, lacking proper labels and certifications, at a store on Chu Van An Street (District 6); and 500 smuggled Chinese stuffed animals on Go Cong Street (District 5)...

Many types of children's toys have unclear origins.

A survey of the market for children's toys in Ho Chi Minh City reveals a complex situation. Most toys, with unclear origins or originating from China, are quite colorful and extremely cheap. "Children just want to buy them because they're colorful, and the price is affordable, so many people choose these types of toys without paying attention to the quality or potential dangers," shared Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Xuan (resident of Tan Binh District).

Mr. Phan Hoan Kiem, Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Market Management Department, said that the Market Management leadership has instructed district and county Market Management Teams to review business locations and warehouses storing children's toys for inspection and confiscation. They are also coordinating with relevant agencies to form inter-agency teams to inspect these harmful products.
