Diagnosing car problems through driving symptoms

1. The engine vibrates and shakes, and doesn't start smoothly.

This is a very common occurrence: when you press the brakes, you notice the car making a rattling or grinding noise from the wheels. If this happens, you should check the brake pads. If the brake pads are worn, they need to be replaced, and the braking system should be serviced to ensure safe driving.

2. The exhaust pipe makes noise when accelerating.

When you accelerate and notice an unusually loud exhaust noise, your vehicle has a problem with its exhaust system; the muffler or exhaust pipe may be damaged or ruptured.

This is also the cause of unpleasant smoke and gasoline fumes from the vehicle; it is necessary to quickly check and repair any damage to the exhaust system and muffler to avoid affecting the environment and endangering the health of those in the vehicle.

3. Loud knocking noises in the engine.

This is usually bad news, as the loud knocking sound is often due to worn or loose connecting rod bearings. Sooner or later, the bearing will fail, the connecting rod will seize, or the connecting rod journals will be damaged.

This damage could be a consequence of using low-viscosity oil, the engine operating under low oil pressure, oil with excessive dirt, or due to incorrect engine assembly, loose engine mounting bolts.

4. A rattling sound in the gearbox.

When driving a manual transmission car and hearing a rattling sound in the gearbox, it could be due to worn gearbox synchronizers. Additionally, a worn clutch slipper could also be the culprit.

5. The locomotive is making a rattling sound.

After driving your car for a while, you might notice unusual noises coming from the engine, whether the car is moving fast or slow. This could be caused by a malfunction in the ignition system, including the spark plugs and fuel injectors. Check these components; the problem could be due to clogged injectors or carbon buildup on the spark plugs. Clean the injectors and replace the spark plugs if necessary to fix the issue.

6. There is a smell of gasoline or burning in the car.

A burning smell can have many causes, such as forgetting to release the parking brake; burnt electrical switches due to replacing the fuse with one that has a higher rating than standard, rendering it ineffective in protecting the electrical system; plastic foam stuck to one of the exhaust pipe sections; burnt clutch plates; or a loose drive belt causing slippage and a squeaking, burning smell.

As for the smell of gasoline, it can escape from the exhaust pipe due to incomplete combustion, a punctured fuel tank, or a leak in the fuel delivery system in the engine compartment, allowing the gasoline smell to travel through the air conditioning system into the interior. This smell is more likely to occur in vehicles with carburetors.

If your car smells of gasoline or burning, you should have its exhaust system checked immediately.

7. The temperature gauge needle rises.

If you see the temperature gauge needle rise to the red zone while driving, it's a sign that the engine cooling system has a damaged hose, low oil level, broken welds, or is low on coolant. You need to check the cooling system, add coolant, and add oil to ensure the engine runs properly and avoid overheating due to piston and cylinder friction, which can cause serious engine damage.
