The Vietnamese Ministry of Defence delegation attended Shangri-La 12.

The Vietnamese Ministry of National Defence delegation, led by Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Deputy Minister of National Defence, arrived in Singapore to attend the 12th Asian Security Conference (also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue).

During his time in Singapore from May 30th to June 2nd, in addition to attending the opening session and plenary sessions held within the framework of the 12th Shangri-La Dialogue, Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh will participate in activities of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, including a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, a courtesy call on President Tony Tan, and working with several major Singaporean businesses.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will deliver a keynote address at the opening session of the Shangri-La Dialogue on the evening of May 31st.

It is expected that Deputy Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh will deliver a speech at the plenary session on the morning of June 2nd; hold bilateral meetings with the Ministers of Defence of Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia, and France; and meet with the Deputy Ministers of Defence of Singapore, Brunei, Russia, South Korea, and the Commander of the US Pacific Command.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), one of the world's leading strategic research organizations, annually organizes the Shangri-La Dialogue. This year's conference is attended by representatives from 31 countries, including Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Timor-Leste, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

Senior officials will attend five joint discussion sessions on the mornings of June 1st and 2nd, focusing on topics such as the US approach to regional security, protecting national interests while preventing conflict, military modernization and strategic transparency, emerging trends in security in the Asia-Pacific region, and strengthening defense cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, Vice Chief of Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China Qi Jianguo, European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Catherine Ashton, and many other senior defense ministers and officials will speak at the joint discussion sessions.

Six special sessions held on the afternoon of June 1st focused on discussing topics such as preventing incidents at sea; the situation in Afghanistan and regional security; missile defense in the Asia-Pacific; new military technologies; defense diplomacy and conflict prevention; and the development of networks for security in Asia.
