Vietnam Ministry of National Defense delegation attends Shangri-La 12

A delegation from the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense led by Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of National Defense, arrived in Singapore to attend the 12th Asia Security Conference (also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue).

During his stay in Singapore from May 30 to June 2, in addition to attending the opening session and plenary sessions held within the framework of the 12th Shangri-La Dialogue, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh will participate in Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's activities, including meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, paying a courtesy call to President Tony Tan and working with a number of large Singaporean enterprises.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will speak at the opening session of the Shangri-La Dialogue on the evening of May 31 as the keynote speaker.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh is expected to speak at the plenary session on the morning of June 2; have bilateral meetings with the Defense Ministers of Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and France; meet with the Deputy Defense Ministers of Singapore, Brunei, Russia, South Korea and the Commander of the US Pacific Command.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), one of the world's leading strategic research organizations that annually organizes the Shangri-La Dialogue, said that this year's conference was attended by representatives of 31 countries, including Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Timor-Leste, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the UK, the US and Vietnam.

Senior officials will attend five general discussion sessions taking place on the mornings of June 1 and 2, focusing on topics such as the US approach to regional security, protecting national interests while preventing conflicts, military modernization and strategic transparency, new trends in security in the Asia-Pacific region, and strengthening defense cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Qi Jianguo, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton and many other ministers and senior defense officials will speak at the general discussions.

Six special sessions took place on the afternoon of June 1, focusing on discussing topics such as preventing incidents at sea; the situation in Afghanistan and regional security; missile defense in the Asia-Pacific; new military technology; defense diplomacy and conflict prevention; and the development of networks for security in Asia./.
