The visit took place in the context of the summit between President Putin and President Trump that took place in Helsinki, Finland, on July 16, and before the US congressional elections in November.
According to Mr. Kosachev, the US congressmen have proposed a meeting with the Federation Council (the Russian Senate). "Negotiations between the two parliaments play an important role in bilateral relations. These visits will have a positive impact on the development of Russia-US relations," Mr. Kosachev affirmed.
Mr. Kosachev also expressed hope that the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee will continue to maintain this inter-parliamentary relationship when it launches the new US Congress.
Previously, from June 30 to July 5, the US Congressional delegation visited Russia and held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Speaking at the meeting, Foreign Minister Lavrov expressed hope that the visit of the US Congressional delegation to Russia would become a symbol of the normalization of relations between the two countries' legislative bodies.
US-Russia bilateral relations are at their lowest point since the Cold War following Moscow's decision to annex Crimea and accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
Most recently, special prosecutor Robert Mueller, former FBI director, who is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US election, continued to release a list of 12 Russian intelligence officers who plotted to interfere in the presidential election, including hacking into the Democratic Party's email system before the vote.
Mr. Kosachev also said that the US side has invited Russian lawmakers to visit Washington, but before the US congressional elections take place, "this is difficult to do."
