Artisan Nguyen Van That in Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City owns a unique bonsai with 15 different types of leaves on the same trunk.

The number of trees in Mr. Nguyen Van That’s garden in Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City is not much, but each tree is “one of a kind”, because it is grafted from several types together. Mr. That named the unique tree he created “compact bonsai”.

Explaining about his special garden, Mr. That said: "The land area is not large enough to grow many different types of plants at the same time, so I came up with the idea of grafting plants of the same family together on the same trunk."

Mr. Nguyen Van That and his bonsai have up to 15 types of leaves.

Regarding the unique bonsai with 15 types of leaves on the same stem, Mr. That shared: “The mother stem is a jackfruit leaf tree. About 4-5 years ago, I started grafting other types of leaves. These are the leaves of the family emblem tree, duck intestine or also known as drill blade, firefly tree, toad star, hair fairy, rocket, duck bill... honestly, now I am not sure if I can remember all the names of these 15 types of leaves. However, I do not want to stop here. When there is a new, suitable bonsai leaf variety, I will continue to graft more.

This artist also revealed that he currently has a new variety and is preparing to graft it to increase the number to 16. “Grafting sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails, but the difficulty is that it takes time to collect many different types of leaves, sometimes having to ask acquaintances and friends to help find them,” Mr. That said.

Mr. That confided: “In addition to wanting to reduce the garden because of the limited area, I personally think that if each tree has its own leaf, each flower, each fruit, it will look very monotonous and boring. That is why I grafted many types together to make it more lively and pleasing to the eye. For example, on the trunk of the marigold tree, I shaped it and then grafted on tangerine, orange, and grapefruit trees. Last year, during Tet season, it produced a total of more than a dozen fruits; some big, some small, some yellow, some green, it looked very interesting.”

Mr. That said he had no intention of grafting many species onto one tree to "set a record" for quantity, but simply grafting trees has been his hobby since he was a child.
