Vietnam's coastline has about 50 known species of sea cucumbers. In the world, there are about 40 species used as medicine and food. Sea cucumbers are considered a delicacy in many Asian countries with quite expensive prices. However, for the Dien Hung people, it is simply a sea cucumber.
Visiting Mr. Nguyen Dinh Trien's family, hamlet 6A (Dien Hung - Dien Chau) on a day in early May 2016, enjoying this nutritious delicacy of the sea along with many interesting stories. 1 kg of rum here costs only 300 thousand VND. But to earn 1 kg of rum is not easy.
Rum divers also do not dive deep, only a few fathoms of water near the shore. Each dive only brings up a few rum, and only more than 1kg per day of diving. The rum is a soft-bodied species, cooked in coastal style.
According to scientific literature, their food consists of plankton and organic matter found in the sea. One way they catch prey is by lying in the waves and catching drifting creatures with their tentacles. They can also be found in large numbers near human marine fish farms.
The most popular rum dish in Dien Hung is cooked with banana roots and homegrown spices such as perilla leaves and piper lolot leaves. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Trung, a veteran fisherman in hamlet 6A, said that this type of sea cucumber is becoming rarer and this year the rum season has come to Dien Hung sea.
