Understanding some common symbols on cosmetic packaging
The expiration date from when the lid is opened of each cosmetic is usually printed on the packaging with a separate symbol.
Open box icon with number
This symbol shows the product's shelf life after opening. M stands for Month. The number before the M indicates the product's shelf life from the date of opening.
Hourglass Icon
This symbol indicates that the product's shelf life is no more than 30 months. European manufacturers are required to print both the open can and hourglass symbols on cosmetic packaging.
UVA Symbol
The symbol indicates that the product contains a sun protection factor.
Book and hand icon
The book and hand icon indicates that information such as ingredient list, instructions for use or contraindications is written on an accompanying sheet of paper.
Green arrow icon
This symbol shows that the product manufacturer is committed to managing waste from their cosmetic packaging in an ecologically responsible manner.
Jumping Rabbit Icon
The leaping bunny symbol indicates that the company that makes the product you are using does not test on animals and has been certified by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics and Cruelty Free International.
USDA ORGANIC Symbol
This symbol means that 95% of the ingredients in the product you are using are organic. This strict standard means that very few products carry this symbol on their packaging.
Letter e symbol
In European Union (EU) countries, the lowercase e symbol means that the information on ingredients and net weight on the packaging has been verified according to EU law.
