The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT - the first "muscle car" with all-wheel drive (AWD).

December 9, 2016 15:43

With its all-wheel drive (AWD) system, the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT clearly has an advantage over its two rivals, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

In terms of sales, the Dodge Challenger clearly can't match its two main rivals, the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, in the muscle car segment. However, the Dodge Challenger remains a very popular muscle car in the US and around the world.

To further enhance the appeal of this "muscle car" line, Dodge has added a new version called the 2017 Challenger GT. Compared to its two "compatriots," the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT has an undeniable advantage: its all-wheel drive system.

The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT is arguably the first two-door American muscle car to feature all-wheel drive. This allows muscle car enthusiasts to confidently navigate any road, especially during the winter months.

The 2017 Dodge Challenger GT's all-wheel drive system is borrowed from its Charger AWD sibling. This system can switch between 1-wheel and 2-wheel drive modes without driver intervention.

Under normal driving conditions, the front-wheel drive of the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT will not be used. Therefore, the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT will operate like a rear-wheel drive vehicle.

Additionally, the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT features a 3-mode electronic stability control system, including a "full-off" mode specifically designed for drifting.

Under the hood of the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT lies a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 gasoline engine, producing a maximum power of 305 horsepower at 6,350 rpm and a maximum torque of 363 Nm at 4,800 rpm. According to Dodge, the engine can achieve 90% of its maximum torque in the 1,800 - 4,600 rpm range.

The engine is paired with an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. Paddle shifters are integrated into the steering wheel. Unfortunately, the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT does not offer a V8 engine or a manual transmission.

Standard equipment on the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT includes 19-inch Hyper Black wheels, projector headlights, a rear spoiler, rear ParkSense parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

Meanwhile, the interior features Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable and heated steering wheel, an infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 6-speaker Alpine sound system, and a 276-watt amplifier. A customizable 7-inch display is also included in the instrument cluster.

The price of the 2017 Dodge Challenger GT has not yet been announced.
