The wings of 1,000 doves lifted the life of a man with 3% health left.
Losing 97% of his health and paralyzed on one side, the man still knows how to get rich on the wings of 1,000 pigeons, a pioneer in good economics in Vinh Phuc province...
Spiritual support
The last rays of sunlight of the day fluttered on the wings of 1,000 pigeons, shining on the sparkling eyes of their owner, Mr. Pham Quang Trung, who only had 3% of his health left. In My An village, Van Quan commune (Lap Thach district, Vinh Phuc province), everyone admired him because although he lost 97% of his health and was completely paralyzed, he still knew how to make a fortune on the wings of his flock of pigeons. To achieve his success today, the person with the greatest contribution must be Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan, who was always by Mr. Trung's side in the most difficult times.

Mr. Pham Quang Trung, 97% disabled, was feeding pigeons. |
Recalling his youthful days full of vitality, Pham Quang Trung said that at the age of 16, due to difficult family circumstances and lack of conditions to continue studying, he went to Dak Lak alone to start a business, but due to lack of experience in growing coffee and pepper, after a few years he went to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a construction worker. After 7 years in a foreign land, he and his wife got married and went back to the North to both work and take care of his elderly mother. In 2007, while going to Hanoi to work, the scaffolding broke and he fell from the 3rd floor.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan said that at that time, she was pregnant with her second child and was about to give birth when she received the news that her husband had a serious work accident and was being treated at a hospital in Hanoi. Her mother-in-law had to pack up and go to Hanoi to see how things were going, while she had to stay home with her first daughter, who was just over 4 years old. The next day, her mother-in-law texted that Mr. Trung had to undergo emergency surgery, but the success rate was less than 50%, and after the surgery, the risk of hemiplegia was over 60%. Hearing the bad news about her husband, she was very confused, hiding all her sadness to prepare for the birth of her second child.
While she was worried about her husband's upcoming surgery, her stomach suddenly tightened, the pain of labor signaling that the baby was about to be born. While preparing for the surgery, she also silently encouraged herself and her husband to get through this surgery together.
After many difficulties, her child was born healthy like any other child, and Trung's surgery was successful. However, the doctor said that if Trung could not walk after 5 months, he might be permanently paralyzed. When he woke up, Trung lost all feeling from his navel down to his feet, but he and his wife still hoped that he would be lucky enough to recover, even though the rate was not high. The longer they waited, the more desperate they became. Half a year passed, and although the family tried to treat him everywhere, they could not save his paralyzed legs. During that time, Trung fell into a state of mental crisis, deadlock, and depression...
Ms. Xuan recalls that every day, because of his inferiority complex about his disability, Mr. Trung was often irritable, throwing and smashing anything he could get his hands on. There was nothing in the house that he did not smash. The most valuable property of the couple, the TV, was also smashed by him. Feeling sorry for her husband who was depressed, Ms. Xuan was not afraid of hardships and suffering, always trying to take care of him like her own newborn child. After a few days of calming down, there were times when Mr. Trung wanted to commit suicide to relieve his wife and children's suffering, so she did not dare to let sharp objects near him. There was also a time when he poured gasoline from his motorbike all over the house, intending to set himself on fire, but luckily she came back in time...

Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan with her husband who has only 3% health left |
After more than a year, she felt sorry for her husband living in a leaky house and their children always catching colds when the weather turned cold, so she discussed borrowing money to build a new house. Seeing that his wife was already in trouble and still wanted to repair the house, Trung did not agree, stopped the construction workers, and even knocked down the wall, but Xuan was still determined to do it. Gradually, the new house took shape, and his heart also calmed down.
Difficult exit model
While watching the workers building a house, he saw that there was plenty of wood, bamboo, hammers, and nails, so he tried to build a cage and lure the birds down. They were only afraid of people with legs, but not people in wheelchairs, so they followed him down, gradually got used to it, and allowed him to catch them in the cage to raise them. From then on, he spent time researching how to raise pigeons, hoping to bring in an income to cover the family's living expenses that was suitable for his current health. The biggest motivation that helped him overcome all his complexes was watching his two children grow up every day, making him think about the responsibility of a man in the family when he could not help his wife.
When the bird cages took shape, in 2008 he tried raising 150 pairs of pigeons. At that time, no one in the locality raised pigeons, so his output was consumed very quickly. From then on, Mr. Trung was determined to build a systematic pigeon raising model.
In 2010, he boldly borrowed more than 20 million VND from the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank to build an iron bird cage and buy 50 more pairs of French pigeons. Due to his lack of experience in selecting breeds and disease prevention and treatment techniques for the flock, the first batch failed. Undaunted, he spent day and night researching on TV, buying books and newspapers to study. During the research process, he realized many things and understood more about the characteristics and growth process of pigeons. After that, he went to Hanoi to the Thuy Phuong Poultry Breeding Research Center to buy 30 pairs of Vietnamese pigeons to crossbreed with French pigeons. Seeing that the pigeons had a healthy first batch, he continued to develop the flock. In 2015, the number of birds in the cage sometimes reached nearly 500 pairs, with more than 80% being crossbred pigeons.

Pigeon farming model of Mr. Pham Quang Trung |
Currently, in his cage there are nearly 400 pairs of parent birds, each month he sells on average from 200 to 300 pairs of birds of all kinds, with the price of breeding birds about 200 thousand VND/pair, the price of meat pigeons he sells is over 100 thousand VND/pair, after deducting costs each month he earns about 6 million VND profit from this model.
Looking at the pair of newly born pigeons in the cage, Mr. Trung shared: It has been nearly 11 years since my work accident, and my family is the biggest source of spiritual encouragement for me. Seeing my wife taking care of a small child and me being no different, I thought to myself that I could no longer be a burden to my wife. Up to now, the pigeon raising model has helped me take care of myself, not having to depend financially on my wife.
Although pigeon farming brings high economic efficiency, he does not dare to expand further because his current health does not allow it. Currently, Mr. Trung only hopes to have enough health to continue maintaining the pigeon farming model, to cover family living expenses and to send his two children to school.
"Seeing my husband paralyzed on one side and my newborn child, there were times when I wanted to leave everything and go to the South to live alone. But at that time, I thought about how the three of us would live if I left, while now I am the economic and spiritual pillar of this family. Living elsewhere may be more comfortable, but with a guilty conscience, it would not be as fun. Currently, Trung loves life more, is more responsible for the family, and his eldest daughter also helps her mother with many housework. All the difficulties that seemed insurmountable in the past are finally as good as they are now," Ms. Xuan confided. |
