(Baonghean)Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, 50 years old, is the village head of Hamlet 3, Binh Son Commune (Anh Son District). He was born into a poor farming family. In 2006, he was elected village head by the villagers and received the Nghe An newspaper from the Commune People's Committee, which he regularly reads after a day's work.

One day, he happened to read an article in the party newspaper about a farmer in a mountainous commune's integrated farm model that yielded high economic efficiency. Connecting the article to the actual conditions in his locality, he realized that his homeland had much potential and many advantages, but he didn't know how to exploit them effectively.

He discussed with his wife the possibility of borrowing money from the bank to rent 3 hectares of land around the reservoir to invest in reinforcing the dam and building a spacious and sturdy system of livestock pens. (The pens were built right next to the pond to raise pigs for meat and sows, using the manure as feed for the fish; and to raise ducks and geese). Initially, he bought 100 kg of fish fry, 50 pigs for meat, 5 sows, and 500 laying ducks and goose chicks to raise.

During the course of his farm operations, he paid more attention to reading newspapers, carefully noting down experiences in farm economic development from articles to apply to his own farm. Currently, Mr. Tuan's farm has about 100 pigs (both meat and breeding), over 100 laying ducks and geese, and 2.5 tons of unharvested carp, catfish, and other fish. His family both sells their products and is self-sufficient in breeding stock, reducing the cost of purchasing breeding stock and minimizing the risk of disease from imported breeds. Mr. Tuan's farm earns an average annual income of 100-150 million VND, allowing him to build a spacious house and provide his children with a successful education.

Seeing the high efficiency of Mr. Tuan's family's livestock farming, many people in the area came to learn from him. Currently, in Binh Son commune, there are more than 10 families running farms following Mr. Tuan's model. He said: "My mountainous hometown still has a lot of potential for farm development, but due to a lack of information, people don't know how to exploit it and develop the economy. I hope that all levels and sectors will pay attention and support by bringing press information to the locality and using appropriate methods of communication so that farmers understand and boldly invest in economic development." For him, since starting his farm, reading newspapers, listening to the radio, and watching television have become a habit every evening.

He excitedly told me, "The changes in my family today are thanks to the Party newspaper. I owe the newspaper a debt of gratitude, and today, with a contributor from the newspaper here, I have the opportunity to convey my thanks to them." With his efforts and contributions to his family and society, Nguyen Van Tuan was commended by the Chairman of the Anh Son District People's Committee for his achievements in production and business development, being recognized as a successful household in the economy for many consecutive years.
