To deal with Russia and China, the US Army is reviving on a large scale to serve total war.
The US will build large-scale army units for total war, instead of the current brigade-level specialized anti-insurgency units.

"The US Army is preparing to undertake what we believe are major and necessary force structure changes over the next five years to address the growing capabilities of Russia and China,"Defense NewsMarch 7 quoted Lieutenant General Eric Wesley, director of the Center for Conceptualization and Future Warfare, speaking at the Institute for a New American Security (CNAS).
According to Wesley, over the past 15 years, the US Army has only focused on building forces based on brigade-level combat units, because their main combat targets are terrorist groups and Islamic rebels.
However, as the threat of large-scale conflicts with rivals such as Russia and China grows larger, the US Army will have to build division-, corps- and even front-level units to conduct large-scale military campaigns under the "Multi-Domain Operations" doctrine.
In addition to restructuring the Army's forces, the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is also looking to revive the Cold War-era "Assault Breaker" operational plan, which was once devised to deal with a large-scale conflict with the Soviet Union.
The core of the current Assault Breaker II plan is to use long-range sensors and aircraft carrying smart bombs and missiles to destroy enemy armor. The first strike would take place within hours, forcing the enemy to stop advancing and allowing the US military to deploy conventional forces to the battlefield.
