Chinese couple sold their child to buy a cat

Having just sold their daughter for 20,000 yuan, the couple spent 2,000 yuan to buy a cat to raise.

The couple sold their child to a family in Shandong province because they could not afford to raise it and the parents objected to having a child before marriage, according to QQ.

The two sold their daughter for 20,000 yuan ($2,877), then spent 2,000 yuan to buy a cat as a pet.

Jiashan County Procuratorate, Zhejiang Province, China, said that the young mother, surnamed Ding, born in 1990, had previously sold another baby girl she gave birth to. Ding's current lover, Jia, is one year older than her.

The police said that Ding and Jia's actions were child trafficking. Jia testified in court that they were both unemployed and could not support their child, so they had to sell it. He said that the 20,000 yuan was used for daily expenses and to buy a cat, hoping to "comfort Ding."

Ding said that in 2012, she sold her first child for 10,000 yuan ($1,438). The daughter she sold was her second child.

The court found Jia and Ding irresponsible as parents and sentenced them to five years in prison. Jia will continue to be prosecuted for his involvement in the sale of Ding's second daughter.
