Young couple self-immolates after son dies

A few months after their 2-year-old son died, the bodies of a young couple were discovered in their charred apartment.

At around 6:15 a.m. on May 8, many residents of the Nam Tien apartment complex in village 7, Dong Tuyen commune, Lao Cai city, discovered apartment 104 on fire, covered in black smoke. When authorities arrived, the house was locked.

The fire was extinguished promptly so it did not spread. At the scene, the bedroom, which was over 10 square meters wide, reeked of gasoline and charred furniture. Inside the room were the bodies of the homeowner, Mr. Nguyen Van Lam (34 years old) and his wife, Nguyen Thi Thuy (29 years old).

Lao Cai Provincial Police Department suspects that Mr. Lam used gasoline to burn down his house to commit suicide. The case is still under investigation.

According to some locals, that morning they saw Mr. Lam buying gasoline to bring home, and a few minutes later the incident happened. This young couple had a 2-year-old son, but the child passed away a few months ago.
