Jennifer Lin, a New York-based reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer who wrote about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s business in Atlantic City, New Jersey, received a call from Trump in 1988.
"The woman said to hold on to Trump and then he started yelling at me," Lin told CNN on October 1. According to Lin, Trump used horrible words to say that she had a problem with her mind, saying that the newspaper and her article were nonsense, leaving her "stunned".
Mr Trump reportedly called Lin's boss in Philadelphia and continued his criticism. "He referred to me with a vulgar word," Lin said.
Lin decided to share the story after watching the live debate between Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Clinton condemned Trump for calling women "pigs" and belittling a former Miss Universe. Craig Stock, Lin's former boss at the Philadelphia Inquirer, confirmed the story.
Hope Hicks, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, said there was “no truth” to Lin’s account.
David Urban, an adviser to Trump, commented that "it is an incredible coincidence that someone appears to remember every sentence, every word, spoken nearly 30 years ago when Mr. Trump was rising in Philadelphia." He concluded that Lin wanted to "use Trump's reputation as bait for tabloid stories."
Lin quit her job two years ago to write a book. "I was insulted by Trump. Now I'm insulted again because the Trump campaign wants to discredit me," she said. "This is a true story that happened to me."
