"To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor," said Donald Trump.
Mr Trump beat out 10 others, including his White House rival Hillary Clinton. Time said Mrs Clinton was the runner-up.
However, Mr. Trump did not seem to like the magazine calling him "President of Divided America".
“I’m not dividing them,” Mr. Trump said. “They’re divided right now. We’re going to bring them back together.”
The Person of the Year title is awarded annually by Time editors to an individual or group of people who have had a major impact on the world and the media, either positively or negatively. Last year's winner was German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"So what about this year's choice — positive or negative? The challenge for Donald Trump is that the country is deeply divided on the answer," Time editor Nancy Gibbs wrote.
